Recondition or 2nd hand?

Recommended Posts

Righty - the engine is locked solid on my 98 wrx.

What are the pros/cons of a recondition vs a 2nd hand eng? :-\

I'm leaning towards the recon just so I can know the cause of the failure. There's no external indications.

And although reconditioning is slightly more expensive, at least i'd know where the engine has been/come from. The mechanics are suggesting around 5.5k. Ouch.

Other option is to sell as non-working car. But doubt i'd get much from that.

Have also searched online, and pple suggest a forged rebuild is almost the same as an OEM one?? But I might try to keep the cost down.

Anyhoo ... thoughts on reconditioning?

I got a rebuild last year. In retrospect I think I might have been just as well off getting one of the prebuilt bottom ends off trademe and chucking my heads on. Jason Leifting or username rgoat for instance seem to have some pretty decent homespun packages. Even the PBMS ones are probably as good as any although maybe not as good value - you would get some kind of warranty though I suspect. Some options to investigate anyway. Second hand engine of unknown history sounds scary to me.

I think I'd go down the road of re-con of my motor or get a wel known outfit to supply recon and jst drop it in? Fark - it's scary though when it sh*ts itself though aye(cost wise I mean)!

If you can afford a rebuild (is it a daily driver?) then go rebuilt.

Reason most ppl go Second hand as it is cheaper.

If getting second hand motor, get a good workshop to supply and fit one, that way you at least get a 3month/5000km warranty.

It is my daily drive. Tho she only really goes out in the wknds. So have given the go-ahead to pull out the motor and have a look to see if its fixable.

reconditioned/rebuilt warranty is 12mths - 20000km from where I'm getting done.

second hand motors they said were guaranteed for only 31 days!!!

will know just wait for the verdict and the growing invoice.

Hmmm agreed. I'd shop around, also ask about some people who have got rebuilds here. Better to get it built correctly than have problems down teh track (not saying you mechanic is an idiot, but reputable builders preferred, imo)

thos prices sound steep especially for the 2nd hand 1,shop around or as said up there just buy one of those v7 sti shortblocks off trademe they go from about 2300-3000 and then you could sweet talk/bribe someone on here to install for you :P you can then spend all the remaining cash on something worth while like strippers and whores

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
