Subaru engines - Reliable

ozzy

Recommended Posts

As in my introduction, I am looking in the near future to get either a wagon or sedan STI. V3 or above. I am wanting to know what to expect regards reliability. Seeing that I will be a first time sub owner, I am unsure as to what to expect, and have read many classified that refer to the major engine overhaul they have just had to complete, all costing big $$$$$.

What do I expect, and what do I look for?

Any help much appreciated.

any car, any engine overhaul will cost you big dollars.. i consider subarus reliable as hell when treated right. servicing is a biggie. if you modify anything obviously reliability is going to go out the window....

anyrthing that age (V3+) is an erratic time bomb

some go off or never stop running then blow up in your face the day after you sell it!

mine is a '98 GTB approaching 190,000 km and has attended many track days and high boost on occasions, never missed a beat

then others are into threir 2nd rebuild even before 100,000' km etc

good servicing ang thorough check ir required - and I would personally go for a re-built motor with receipts/proof of what went into the 'build'

or buy 03 plus model and not worry for 5+ years about the same problem

this is not a SUBARU specific problem but any performance car of that age

EA63 through to EA81 = Reliable

EJ20/EJ25 = time bomb

ER27 through to EZ36 = solid as a rock

If your buying anything before version 7 with an unknown history - keep some money aside

So true...

But EJ15 is relible as hell too

Its very hard to kill a EA71 and EA81 engine

probably because anything thats old as shit usually the bores are glazed up and they rev quite well when trying to blow them up and they dont pick up in the bore like a cleaner engine would.

speaking of ej15, anyone want one? real nice wee runner with 5 spd box, in a impreza we used to own and drive as a daily has chassis damage now though, going to dump the shell soon would be a shame to waste the engine- take it away someone

Maybe its more to do with the higher tolerances and everything being made twice as thick as it needed to be as casting methods werent as precise as today

Except the electrics are shitty, they like to blow head gaskets and make bugger all power when you consider a tuned EA81 makes the same as a stock EA82t...and they do this if you crank the boost up

there was a poll on the old site about whos rebuilt there engine nunce, once, twice etc i dont think it was a very good selling point for subaru.my cars never on the road for longer then 3months always serviced (but i like to rape the poor thing),if you plan on modding keep a few pennys in the bank,i never had any probs before i started modding though, absolutely thrashed it solid for 18 months got the modding bug and almost instantly its been a never ending downward spiral but who cares buy 1 cause there mean

with a large enough population of any car type in one place those sort of results are going to be skewed

ask how many of us have installed alarms into our cars and you can assume we live in a crime-ridden nation

you will get the same reaction on any message board is my point (Holden/Mitsi/Fiat etc)

heck that's why most people join - to learn how to fix/tinker with their chosen Motor etc.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
