Is a VF22 really an upgrade from a VF23?

I've got a V3 STi Type R with the factory fitted VF23 turbo and the car is all stock standard other than a boost controller. I have the boost set to 16psi as it cuts out if it goes over 18psi as i assume the ecu just isn't mapped that high. It spools up really low (full boost well before 4k) and holds it all the way to the red line. From what i've read on here, the VF22 takes another 1000rpm to reach full boost, and if the ecu wont handle having it set any higher whats the point? Would I not just be making it a little more laggy for no reason?

I've had so many people tell me stories about how hard wrx's go with a vf22 but i just don't see where the benefit is? The V3 ecu's can't be chipped or re-mapped from what i understand, and i'm not forking out 2k+ for a link. Has anyone here "upgraded" from a VF23 to a VF22, i'd be really keen to here how it went from someone who has actually done it rather than more stories about "how hard my mates rex went with a vf22"....

cheers

Im surprised that you can't go over 18psi. As i tht the Sti boost cut limit was 21psi. Is you boost gauge accurate ? Most are not.

From memory on the stock ECU i got 19psi at one stage.

The vf22 has a slightly larger compressor about 1mm from memory than a vf23.

So to create the same mass air flow as a vf23 it will create slightly less egbp. Thus for the same boost it will make abit more power on the same boost setting.

You don't need to spend 2k on a link to tune a car.

However both turbos will max out your yellow injectors at arround 200kw so you may as well keep the vf23 and have better spool.

I ran a 23 in my old rs with V3 sti engine. At one stage it was tuned to 21psi, which was way too much power. I ran it at 16psi for 2 years with no problems. I think alot had to do with a great tune on my Possum Link. Id say keep the 23 and spend some money on an aftermarket ecu.get that tuned to how you like to drive. I owned my rs for 10 years and I never climbed out of it without a smile on my face.

as Qwerty said, both will see the limits of your stock injectors so id look to spend money elsewhere for more ponies before you ditch the 23.

Common concensus is:

-VF22 gives bigger numbers but VF23 spools quicker but less top end.

i changed my car from VF22 to a VF23 and i must say id never go back to a vf22!!! they lag sooo much more than vf23 and the vf23 seems to pul the same to 8000rpm as the 22 did but the 22 just laged a hell of a lot more....

I was the opposite, I hated the 23 it had the smallest power band on my car. spooled at 4k and all over at 6 and a bit, the 22 felt like it gave me way more effective power band. To be honest no VF is slow spooling in the big scheme of things.

all my rex has a vf22 first mod i do to it, then run it with a electronic boost controller with high gain

vf23 dies out where as the 22 keeps going... try racing me on the motorway eat ya alive

but then ive blown up countless engine already cause running high boost but still have the vf22 still going strong

but cant wait to put ,y IHI RX6 turbo in... now thats what you call LAG

sorry this comment amuses me. the only reason you would have killed any motors with your vf22 and your "high boost" would have been because your tune (or lack of tune) is shit and/or lack of supporting mods.

which leads me to mention that the same problems you faced with the vf23, would be of exactly the same notion. lack of tune/mods. the vf23 is a fantastic turbo, of which i've chosen over every other ihi turbo.

standard ecu so itwont be a tune ecu, theres no mods other then a front mount and a boost controller and the basic 3" exhaust and airfilters... running 1.6bar and redline rev... so having Subaru for over 7 years i would know what and how i killed so many motors... just another day to me, i'll just another motor... at least i had fun doing it

i think the benefit that the vf23 a small amount of lag which i never noticed it when shifting at 5000rpm anyway and while doing drag racing the rev is about 6000rpm droped from 8500-9000rpm so it pretty much past its efficiency range...

if you guys worry so much about Lag get a H6 and go buy yourself a Honda

yeah exactly as i mentioned. it wasn't the turbo that killed the motor, it was the operator. a vf22 isn't powerful enough to wreck a motor, unless you're detonating it to pieces like you have. i've been running 200/240kw at 20psi on the same non-sti motor for 5 years now. only difference is, i've done it properly.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
