Noisy VF23 turbo

Recommended Posts

hey fellas..

i got a VF23 a while back to replace my blowen VF22 and ever since i got the VF23 its had bearing noise??

when engine is idling u can hear the turbo spinning....and when u turn the engine off u can hear it winding down to a stop...

i was wondering if this is sooooo bad ..the reason i asked is iv had a lot of RBs with standard ballbearing turbos and they sound the same??? have they all been rooted??

my question is does this urgently need rebuilding?? has been doing it since i got it??

and can anything on the vf23 bee modified to make it any better?? sounds stupid i know but i did read on one members car a while back a modified vf23?? dont know what got modified LOL

what sort of price am i looking at for a rebuild??

or should i go td05h 20g?

Good question I was going to ask the same

A mate bought a v5 recently and it's doing the same

Seems to boost fine but can hear the turbo slightly whine at idle etc

Can hear it rev up if u gas the car a bit at idle but after 2krpm can't hear lol

Maybe masks by engine noise

yea bro same...which turbo is his???

seems common as iv seen heaps of vf23s for sale stating the same...

and my old skyline did the same for ages without blowing...

the noise on mine goes away as soon as u start making + pressure as the noise stops and u hear the suction "spool sound"

Both the vf22 and 23 are ball bearing turbos and bearing noise is normal on idle or low rpm and when switching it off for 5-10 seconds. Its only a problem if its screaming its tits off on boost. Some will be worse than others, I enjoy listening to the sound of them when there spinning down, they sound farkn Orsum! ;D

did you check the shaft for play before you installed it?

just fell for play, it should have minimal play if you push and pull on the nut on the compressor wheel, but should have no play if you wiggle it side to side.

If its not smoking and theres no excess play it's probably fine.

I noticed a noise increase once I removed most of the recrictions on the intake with my Vf28 (140,000kms on it and it still went fine)

yeah my vf23 is noisy. especially so on its twisted setup. i stripped it down before installing and all good, tight as a nun's nasty too.

LOL i feel mint about it now...sounds like a jet engine spooling down when turned off hahaha

I had a VF22 that did the same thing for a few months before it blew itself to peices under boost

Did ur one whine at idle or At revs

The v5 one is vf22 I think as not checked but on trademe auction the seller had put as turbo replaced with that so must be lol

my vf 23 does same thing bro.i couldnt really hear it before when i had my factory downpipe on,but since changing it you can here the turbo,

mine still spins for like 10 secounds after you turn it off, sounds awsome.and whn changing thru gears you can hear the turbo

never had any issues with it,ithink its just what they do,

The vf22 I just put On mine does that now but not for as long after shut off say 5 seconds and can hear it just At idle and maybe like at up to 1200 rpm

Seems to boost fine

I did put a de catted pipe on it so perhaps that's a factor lol

My vf30 never mde any whine noise whatso ever even with 3in exhaust and pod

yea i allways thought ballbearing turbos would do this...as my old bb skyline turbos did the same thing for ages...

allthough wen i hit up steve murch on SDU and said that u can tell a BB turbo apart from a thrust bearing by the sound he said i was on crack basicly LOL and a fight started from there...

seems i was right though?

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
