TYRE Choice

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

So I know many people have gone over tyre choices in the past but I have a choice to make out of a few different tyres and really want to get it right, here are my options:

Michelin Pilot Sport 3

Goodyear Eagle F1

Toyo T1R

Bridgestone RE001

I would appreciate comments on durability, road noise, comfort & grip.

Please don't comment on performance vs price, just the characteristics of the tyre thanks!

Cheers,

Ben

T1-R are good, using them atm, wet and dry handling is excellent - but I don't tend to push the tires on the road.

RE-001 are good in the dry; in the wet the T1-R outperform them, but being a assymetric tire there is less road noise compared with the directional tires.

This is from personal use of the two different tires, rather than saying: 'my mate reckons these are better'

If you simply want the best dry weather grip possible then the T1R is your best bet.

If you want good all round grip regardless of weather then get the Dunlop Direzza

This comes from having owned multiple cars each with these two sets of tires.

Have both the RE001s and Eagles on my cars, they are pretty similar in the dry but the Eagles are a fair bit better in the rain.

Would take the Eagles out of the lot, although can't comment on the Pilot Sports as I haven't/don't know anyone thats had any experince with them.

Got about 20000km I think on the Eagles. (Made them work a few times over their lifespan though)

Dunlop Direzza DZ-101? or have they been superseeded? I didn't have these on the car long enough to determine their characteristics. I did do 5 laps in Taupo on them, and they were ok at low-moderate speeds. Bit squirmy though (as with most road tires).

Dunlop Sport Maxx is a much better tire - yes I have used them, and had a lot more than their claimed '25,000km' or so. I got over 30,000 on them.

I've had T1Rs and Eagle F1 (GSD3)s previously, now using RE001 and wouldn't go back.

Grip is pretty similar in general (RE001 better when warm, T1R slightly better cold+wet), but the real kicker is sidewall strength - in that regard T1Rs are hopeless.

I found them too pressure sensitive, chewed out the shoulders pretty fast and were very susceptible to sidewall cuts on gravel, in fact I think they all died from punctures/cuts or uneven wear before the main tread wore out.

Eagle F1s had a more consistent feel than T1R but were still vulnerable to punctures, and like the T1R are extremely floaty on gravel - no surprise when they have a very similar tread pattern.

RE001 are better in every way except cold+wet grip as mentioned above, and there isn't much difference there either. I wouldn't mind trying the RE050 at some stage though, apparently they have similar performance but last longer.

I noticed the same lack of sidewall strength in the T1R's, and same thing with the Proxies 4's so it must be a Toyo thing. For this reason I would not buy them again. Oh and the road noise was quite bad with these IMO

Quite liked the Eagle F1 GSD3's all around really. They did wear quite fast though, so far T1R's are looking like they will get more kms. Maybe I'm just more of a Nana these days though.

I've got factory suspension and 17/45/215 tyres and it annoys the feck out of me at times. Having a quite exhaust really emphasizes how bad the road noise really is. I'll probably be trying an asymmetrical tyre next.

I do not have a quiet exhaust lol

I dont have any experience with any you've listed but have run Direzza DZ101 , they arnt to bad , road noise is good but iv never really pushed them hard.

However id urge you to consider Hankook Ventus R-s2

Iv pushed them hard around the track and the grip is excellent . Wet handling is also very good.

Durability is good ( average tyres would be stuffed under similar use )

Road noise is good , havent noticed any although I have a loud exhaust.

Also they are silica compound so have a lower rolling resistance ( better fuel economy )

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
