On Board Boost Cut?

To anyone who's reading this.. lol

I'm driving a 97 Impreza WRX, EJ20 Turbo. What's safe amount of boost to pump in? I've put in a Turbosmart Boost Tee and it does spike up towards 18 PSI, where then the engine cuts out completely, is that an onboard boost cut on ECU or is it the engine just giving up on me?

Mine cuts at 14psi, so not sure what's going on with yours. Unless you've got a version four, in which case maybe you have a higher cut. Is the "engine cuts out" sudden and violent? If so that's boost cut. If not then it's probably pulling timing or something to stop itself blowing up

Well i've put a boost gauge in and it happily boosts at 14.5 PSI, but any higher and it just stops till the revs drop and the boost drops.. hoping it's a boost cut. But to be safe i've turned the boost down to 10 PSI...

Fuel pump crapped out and running a standard Impreza fuel pump now.. Pick A Part didn't have any boosted ones

Yeah my boost cut used to be 14psi, so sounds about right.

There any need to have the boost tap in there? Just run standard...

are you able to hold boost over 14psi without it tappering off?

I'm going to be the kill joy one here and say, leave it at 10osi until you get a better boost tee or EBC. Your engine isn't going to like hitting 18PSI at all..

What engine modifications have you done to the car??

maybe run under 15 if thats what ur computer likes

lol put a v7sti pump in there $40 and that will handle more than u can pusg thru with 15psi

yeah sounds like the computers cutting into limp mode as its running out of gas being a wrx you'll have a tdo4? if your wanting more boost a recommend running an aftermarket electronic boost controller.

But be careful as you could lean your car out and it'll detonate and you can say bye bye to your engine.

plus you could melt a piston as well as wrx aren't forged internals.

I'd personally upgrade your injectors to yellows, ecu to sti, and turbo to one of the vf series then when you want more boost upgrade the internals to forged.

I'd be far more worried right now about the non turbo fuel pump not supplying enough and just blowing it up all on it's own. There is a reason there is a turbo one and a non turbo one.

The TYPE of boost control has nothing to do with this problem. You could just drill a hole in the wastegate line to run whatever pressure you want. If you have a boost cut of 15psi (or whatever) then just don't run that much, problem solved. But get the fuel pump sorted before you keep fanging it.

Yeah well im taking it easy so I don't underfuel my engine. Looking for a walbro intank pump to replace it.

And it happily sits at 15PSI before cut-out.

So you have a Top Mount still??

I'd turn the boost down to 10psi (Stock) and then get a new fuel pump, then if you are wanting more boost, get a better T that doesn't spike.

anyway before u do anything else perhaps wind boost To under 15 so at least it's not cutting out all the time

Maybe a good service and things Like spark plugs be a good investment if they not changed

Boost is at 10 PSI at the moment, should be happy till I find a Walbro intank.

Slowly working up.

Coolant: Done

Oil and Filter: Tomorrow.

Plugs: Tomorrow probably.

Clutch: Needs to be done asap

Rest of the s**t... god knows when lol. comes down to money.
