Noob question: 2002 2.0 TX vs TS-R

Sorry about the (probably) dumb question, looking at buying a Legacy wagon to replace my 4wd Familia hatch, pretty keen on a non turbo with the associated lower costs & insurance etc.

I seem to have either 2 options; the TX or the TS-R. Can anyone enlighten me to the differences between these models? I can't seem to find much out about them.

Obviously there is a bit of a difference in trim, but they appear to have different engines too.. is the TX SHOC and the TS-R DOHC? If so is there much of a difference in performance?

I've test driven a TS-R here in Dunedin in both auto and manual (man the auto was sh!t, staying away from them!) and found it nice to drive compared to my Familia. Unfortunately I can't find any manual TX wagons to test here in Dunedin, but have seen a couple in the NI that look like they could be worth investigating - I just don't want to go all the way to the NI to find a TX is significantly underpowered compared to a TS-R!

If this has been covered before, my apologies. I have tried searching on here but I haven't come up with much. If it has been covered can someone point me in the right direction..

Cheers

Guys correct me if I am wrong!

From my knowledge, the TX is the most basic Legacy, thus no airbags, no abs and fwd (at least in BG), they also have the most basic trim. The TS-R is the top spec 2l Legacy, akin to the GTB, shares alot of the same trim, ABS, 4WD, airbags and some have the Blisten suspension.

As for power, the TS-R makes an easy 10kw more or so.

Bottom line, at one point there was a TX BG4 in my driveway, now there is a TS-R BG5B. Go the TS-R, hands down IMO.

From what I've seen, the TX models still have air bags etc but trim is definitely more basic, although there seem to be quite a few variations with some having digital a/c etc. I was mainly interested in the engine specs, but it seems like the TS-R is the way to go!

I guess I'll keep waiting (and hoping) for the elusive manual TS-R with lowish km's to turn up locally at a reasonable price.

A local dealer here is wanting 10.5k for one with 110k on the clock which wouldn't be too bad aside from the stuffed roof lining and bald tyres. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd hope there were better deals than that out there! Much tidier autos with same km's seem to be going for about 9k at dealers

Picked up a BG TS-R manual for a mate with 140,000 for $3500

As stated before the goodies that the TSR gets over the TX is:

DOHC engine

GTB bodykit with spotlights

Better interior trim including Momo steering wheel, leather gear knob, sports seats

Optional extras:

Double Sunroof

Bilstien Shocks

Privacy glass (tinted)

Rear Spoiler

HID lights?

I think just the better interior alone makes it worth the extra $$, and the fact all it takes is a set of GTB 17s and small drop in ride height and you have yourself a GTB lookalike without the insurance/gas bills :)

BH has both airbags and AWD in all models.

This I did not know.

Bro basically go with the TS-R bro. Not knocking anyone with a TX but if you get it, your are going to want more. TS-R gives you the full Subaru experience minus the turbo, they stick like shit to a blanket, have enough power to get you around and are a solid car. If you get the TX you will just end up wondering why you didn't get the TS-R. Wish someone had told me that when I got one all those years ago :(

one word

250t ( or if you can get into the 3.0s even better) nothing better than displacement when talking NA ( coming from a 5.7L v8 owner)

Just remember the 250t only comes in 4AT trasmission. If your going down that route I would save the extra cash and get a 3.0R 4th Gen with 5AT Tiptronic :)

9-10.5k You could be buying a nice GTB or B4 Turbo. I see its about insurance costs. How old are you? My TT RSK is cheaper to insure than my old Primera wagon p12

Thanks for the replies guys, I'm not hugely worried about the performance gains of a turbo so I think I'll stick to n/a.

Basically I need an awd wagon that I can chuck bikes on the back of, skis on the top of, and have room to fit a bit of gear inside. I don't really drive fast or hard, I just enjoy a car that handles well and can keep the speed up through the bends (the only place I bother pushing it a bit :D ). On the open road I normally cruise along just over 100. So with that in mind I don't think I'd miss having turbo too much. Especially since I'm coming from a non turbo set up anyway.

I'm 24, so insurance costs should hopefully drop a little next year.

Ideally I'd be at the 9k end of the price range, but there are bugger all private sales that I can find. Looks like it's going to be a waiting game for the right one to come up

Well there you go, you want awd, that rules out TX

The newer TX wagons 2000-2003ish are awd I think? Most of the ones I've looked at have been anyway... unless I'm horribly mistaken haha

I have found a possible starter today - 2000 ts-r w 90k km for $9.3k at a dealer

Personally wouldnt go to a dealer for a car under 5 years old. Pay extortionate prices imo

It's a matter of getting what you want. There are next to zero private sales of manual versions at the moment. Also, alot of the private sales I've seen recently have been asking as much as a dealer anyway! ::)

Its probably more that 90% of the good ones are from dealers. :D

haha exactly! plus you get the reassurance of a warranty etc and any small things fixed up prior to sale

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
