What kind of oil? Suggestion always help

Hey guys, still finding my way around car and still low on knowledge.. I've changed engine oil a few times before on my dad's oil toyota. I've owned a 112ks RSK legacy and I want to know what's the best oil? I'm talking about the thickness? "10-40w" "15-50w" etc...

What's the best type of oil to use on a car with 112ks on odo? and at how many k's I should move on to a different type of oil? thanks!

I use 10-40w castrol magnatec, it works well for older engines

if you consider new zealand's climate and also your type of car and milage, i would say 10 30w would do the job just fine(thats what i run in mine). as for brand, you could pick up a 5l oil and filter from subaru from around $90 which is probably your best option, or you could get some aftermarket oil from repco, such as Valvoline, nulon or castrol edge etc..

usually subaru's are serviced every 10,000 ks but it depends on many conditions. some people tend to change the oil at around the 5000k mark.

I am dropping a new EJ20D with 80,000 on the odo into a friends car. 10w30 be fine for that right?

10w-30 is recommended oil by Subaru for NZ climate.

Personally I use Castrol Magnatec (10w-40) + Genuine filter every 5,000ks ($30-35 oil on sale, $19 filter)

Note: Your engine will take approx. 4.5l and most oil packs are 4l, so I normally buy 3x when on sale giving me enough for 2x full changes plus a bit extra for top-ups.

On the other hand, "high performance" oils like Castrol Edge (Sport) and ELF come in 5L bottles, giving you extra for topups or to do what a lot of people do and "overfill" to begin with

Yeah I wish all brands came in 5 litre packs. Edge does seem like overkill for most daily drivers, I doubt most people would push their cars hard enough to cause a 10w-40 to thin out beyond a safe level. Good peace of mind if you do track days though.

I like to stick with full synthetic in turbo cars, handles the heat etc better and so on.

Edge 5w30 gave a bit more turbo noise in my '02 GTB so I use Valvoline 5w40 instead now.
