1st gear sounds like reverse

My gear box just started to wine in first gear. Sounds like a remote control car but the rest are sweet? Any ideas? On cost or problem???

was gunna hazard a guess it is a straight cut 1st BUT seeing as it never made the noise before : checked fluids?

It happens when you thrash subaru's,(and people love to floor it in 1st & 2nd on turbo engines) mine has a slight wine in second, but nothing to worry about just yet.Once the case hardening of the gears wears (the gear loses its shape), it's really time for a rebuild.

Yea i looked at checking the fluids but has no dipstick and i have no hoist to lift it up straight to get an accurate reading, between this and my RM im just having major problems. Its not a good end to the year lol

yeah they have a 1/2 inch check bung in the side of the gearbox underneath. ideally want it on the hoist or even better across a pit

Just found out R3XTC... My sti i wish i never sold got burnt out, for sport, nothing was stolen...

Oh yea what did you find when you stripped it, what should i be prepairing for

It's pretty much not fixable unless your going to get the gear sets re hardened

Very common on sr20det gearboxes from the years of clutch kicks and drop clutches

Spoke to some gearbox reconditioners and they told be it was either input bearing or lay shaft bearing as I get a whirring on idle with clutch out and whine on acceleration in 1st 2nd and 3rd

Pulled the box down and bearings are fine

First 3 gears are visually worn and you can see the hardening has vanished - its basically back lash creating gear whine on acceleration ( gears are trying to spread apart on load )

Best thing u can do is either put up with the noise - or just get another box and swap it over - I'm on my 2nd Whiney box

Yea im guttered as, i was in the middle of trying to get it back... The box is fixed, only cost $186 from geartech... New problem, put it back in and no clutch... The thrust bearing wasnt connected when i got it so i looked a datto box in my mates garage which had a similar set up and cloned that... EPIC fail
