Painting vs Powdercoating Wheels

Recommended Posts

Looking at one of the following 2 options to change colour of factory 18"s to a dark gun metal grey, when they are due for new tyres.

- Powder Coating - $550, inc removal, fit and balance

- 2K Paint - ???? anyone know price ?????

Anyone done this and which option do you think is better ?, im thinking although 2K isnt as durable, it offers wider colour choice in metallics, is more metallic looking, extra paint for coluor match.

Unless im curbing the mags, is 2K going to be resistant enough ? ive had shadowchrome wheels before and they didnt seem to chip much at all, had them 4 years and 40,000 kms.

All sorted, $270 all up if I prep them, any standard 2K colour, colour+ clear. Apprently 2K is fine unless I plan to race it on Gravel, and has the benefit of being easy to touch up if curbed.

Definately cant wait to get new tyres fitted and do this.

I'm a huge fan of powder coating too haha ;D 550 is a bit much though...how much was it just to get coated? Not including removing, fitting balance etc.

Should put up some pics once there done :) wouldnt mind seein em..

$80-100 per Wheel at Cambridge Powder Works, they media blast the wheel, remove any minor curbing and do 2 coats of powder.

Ive seen some dulux samples and wasnt really happy with any of their metallics. Looking for quite a specific colour to match the front grille and level of window tint :)

LOL im so fussy, but im aiming to create a stockish looking GT sleeper, so everything I do has to blend in well with the factory colour and rest of the car.

Had a set of wheels painted, not powder coated about 18 months ago and they seem to be fine. Have a few stone chips on em but I do a fair bit of open road driving.

(Unsure what grade or kind of paint though, just dropped of and picked up)

What sort of roads ? just regular ? alot of road works ?, how bad are the chips and could they be touched up easy ?

Are either of the methods reversible? For example if you get tired of the colour and want to return to original.

Also Heylin, this is what my car looks like with gun metal grey wheels. Except this is a photoshop job, not real :P

I wouldn't be putting my alloy wheels in an oven! Brittle enough as is.

2k all the way!

I used a standard acrylic single pot on my last set and it was good. few chips when taking wheel bolts in and out but not noticeable

Meh each to their own, it shouldnt matter as long as their not forged.

When ever i do stuff for club members i always cook it up at a lower temp for a few hours so not as bad as your probably thinking. Powder coating them would be more durable though. Had mine on for a year and a half, had some spirited driving in gravel/my usually shitty driving and still no chips :D

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
