VF38 - Oil Line Mesh Filter ??

Recommended Posts

Anyone know if the JDM Legacy's (2004 GTB) have these in their oil lines ? or is this something on the USDM 2.5L models ?

Wanting to look after my VF38 and apprently this is classed as service item at each oil change, pretty slack of Subaru if it is, since it takes 1 hour labour just to get to the bloody thing.

You would think they would do an in-line filter somewhere accessible if they felt the turbo needed a seperate fitler. CT26 & CT20b turbos last 180,000 kms easy and dont have any fancy mesh filters, yet you hear of VF38 dying in the USA all the time due to oil starvation and this little mesh filter.

::) little mesh filter is more than likely the problem then, it must not be getting the attention it needs, or should be throwin away, an only use genuine oil filters. ;D

Alot of the US guys get regular banjos fitted and ditch the stock one which has the filter in it. Unsure if 2.0L JDMs have them though.

Called Subaru, $58+gst, I thought Toyota bolts were expensive :)...

Anyway guy said I can get away with cleaning the filter, and it only needs to be done on fresh imports, or cars with unknown service history.

ie do once, use quality oil and filters, proper warm up and warm downs and it should not be a future issue. I may add it to the service regime and check it every 2nd oil change ie every 16,000.

Quick question, can anyone tell me how easy is it to get the block side banjo bolt for the primary Turbo on a TT?

Will have a look tonight, but currently have the inlet manifold and Primary off, so hoping it should be easy enough to get to?

I think it would be prudent to check this as the primary turbo has failed bearings.

cheers

you do that and let me know when you need another turbo

Its right in behind the cam cover. Can take it off without taking the cam cover off but it requires a 14mm stubby spanner. I bought a $2 spanner from supercheap that I was going to cut down to use.. havent got around to it yet :D

Re oil mesh filter...Carefully remove

...Examine under strong light

...Biff over shoulder

...Carry on.

Yeah I said to my mechanic thats what id rather do, but he advised against that, so many different opinions

1) new filter

2) clean filter

3) ditch filter

So come on guys what is it ? or at least the pros and cons of each option. Subaru service bulletin says it ok to clean, vorigan are you saying that cleaning in solvent and blowing out with air will damage the mesh ?

if that filter clogs/works and catches something that aint supposed to be in the line then it starves the turbo, your average turbo can pass anything that's gunna get caught in the "filter"

dolphin disclaimer : I think that's how it works anyway : I am in no way an expert in the field UNLIKE one of the respondee's that has already spoken up in the thread thus far

what to do?

i eat sleep and drink this stuff 24/7 365 days a year......read my last reply and you pick

XR6 turbo falcons die due the filter dam good money spinner for ford same for subs

Didnt spot that last one :)

So ditch it you say ?

Im picking provided I run good oil, good filter, change it regularly and do proper warm up warm down s after hard driving it will be fine ?

I recall my old CT26 turbo ran for 185,000 kms with no issues, and Toyota never ran any additional filters, hell I even used Ryco filters for the 100,000 kms I owned the car. Anyything wrong using Ryco with Subies ?

you cant compare turbos there's many contributing factors that come into the oil requirements as has been mentioned it only takes a pubic hair and the filters blocked it has a better chance living without it.

Talked to a Subaru tech today, more out of interested on their side of the story, and their take on it is that it was added to filter out fine aluminium particles present in fresh engine at time of manufacture, and as we know was never indicated as a service item or to remove.

One would think the oil filter would be doing the job of stopping large particle reaching the turbo ??.

Large particals of what? its already filtered by the oil filter.

The link i gave in like the third post by Subaru US says, remove it.

Everyone on here is saying remove it. One of NZs top turbo builders and mad scienstists is telling you to remove it. So remove it.

If you wanna keep it, just make sure you send it to Vorigan and get him to rebuild and support your fellow memebers :)

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
