First Gear whine

hi there i have a 1998 GTB legacy BG5 and i noticed the other day when i put it in first gear and foot on the clutch coasting down the hill it has a slight whine in first gear.

now i know this is common from all the thrashes people give these in first gear but my question is it ok to keep it like this or should i be looking for a replacement i mean it doesnt crunch into gears or anything like that

maybe you've burred something, drive around in first for a while, it might wear down???

so next time i hear clunk clunk clunk from the engine, i should just drive around for awhile until the big end bearing grinds itself round again? LOL just remember suggestions in a tech thread will be followed by people who know no better

how fast are you coasting to hear the noise? 1st gear at 50kmh is a bunch of revs, so at clutch in & idle there will be a large differential between the input shaft revs and the flywheel, which the spigot bearing will have to cope with. maybe that is making some noise? you might be able to hear it in 2nd to a lesser extent (same conditions at ~90kmh but more road noise)

if its strictly 1st then (while engaged in 1st) try putting a little pressure on the gearstick in each direction to see if the noise changes. if it does, then a selector fork may be slightly bent

Does it whine under load ?

Or is exhaust too loud?

Normally gear whine is worn teeth resulting in excessive back lash

All i know with my experiences with Subaru gear boxes is - launching them makes 1st gear whine ( excessive back lash ) - keep launching and then they go boom

at this stage exhaust way exceeds it as per why i only know by clutch coasting 1st its whines consistant with the speed havent noticed it cause i dont generally thrash first only on the drag strip normally boot in 2nd or 3rd

Chuck a silencer in and see if you have whine on acceleration - if you have whine on acceleration - and whine on Decel - and you can hear the pitch change at the change over point of accel and decel that's excessive back lash between the gears and the different pitch you hear change over is the gears on the drive and coast sides

Excessive back lash won't last doing launches - as the impact the gears take when the clutch is dropped will smash the gears Eventually

Thicker oil can reduce whine as it takes up the back lash too a degree and also acts as a cushioning effect when dropping the left pedal

But any who if your not launching it - it should last -

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
