Fuel tank measured non-linearity

Have you ever had an inkling that maybe the fuel gauge fell quicker after the needle reached half way? I did, so I did a fully scientific experiment and found out my hunch was true.

Here is what I specifically measured for my car, you mileage may vary :

Fuel Gauge litres between gauge marks

F 0

3/4 17

1/2 14

1/4 13

E 10

No gas 5

So what does this tell me? That the distance between F and 3/4 gives the longest driving distance, and that the distance between 1/4 and E gives the shortest distance. And when it\'s down to E, then the 5 litres left in the tank is really only fumes, because of the saddle shape and shallow shape of bottom of the tank.

It\'s confirmed my thoughts that the fuel runs out quicker at the bottom half of the gauge.

I thought it was cos the foot got heavier (so you went faster) and got to your destination quicker before you ran out of gas lol ;D

Yep I ve never trusted gauges for that reason. Never put that much effort into proving it tho. Ive found in GF8 once my light comes on theres roughly $20 of 95 in the tank or 8-9L.

It\'s a WRX thing I think... my legacy has a very linear and accurate fuel gauge... both my WRXs have had the same behaviour

as yours... you think you are getting really good mileage... then suddenly it\'s empty.

Oh Debs it\'s your fault my car runs out of gas at the bottom of the tank

Gauge is only an indicator of fuel - not an exact measure

You drive a Subaru - fuel wont have been a consideration when buying it

Suggestion is refill before less than E

In the old BG the needle had to be its own width in clear space under the E before it actually ran out, someone told me there was around 12L left in the tank once the light came on but clearly not
