BL/BP SI Drive: Just a gimmick or useful piece of kit?

Hey guys,

Just wondering what peoples perspectives are on SI Drive in the BL/BP shape Legacies. Is it really all that? Or just a bit of a gimmick that sounds much better than it actually is? Trying to weigh up whether its worth paying more for a slightly newer GT that has it, or if its not really that flash anyway.

Ive heard that Sport mode actually produces more power than Sport Sharp, hence my scepticism!

Apparently... APPARENTLY .... the only thing Si drive changes/modifies is the throttle response and gear hold (auto)

What ADIKT said... no difference in power through various modes, just throttle feel.

The first BL/BPs did not have it.

When mapped correctly it can be used for throttle mapping and 3 different boost levels.

It works very well when mapped correctly!

Not /entirely/ true. The ECO button in first gen BP/BLs basically has the same effect, except you are going from what the later models presumably call Sport Sharp by default, to a selected Dull, or whatever SI drive calls that.

Mine seems to be mapped correctly then because when im in intelligent i get pretty much no boost even when i go to the redline, and get boost when i go into sports and sports sharp. I also seem to get a better fuel economy in intelligent than when im in either sports modes. Just my 2 cents and my trials in my BL5 subie

Don't recall the manual having an ECO button.

SI drive definitely a gimmick. Annoyingly it's set to default to Sport (the middle setting) after every engine start and won't switch in to Sport Sharp until the engine's warmed up. The 2 lower settings do help with managing the poor clutch takeup in traffic though - every manual BP bar one I've driven (including mine) had really average clutch bite point and Sport sharp just exacerbates it. Or maybe I just need a new clutch.

AFAIK SI drive only came on the facelift BP's - buy a newer GT for the 6 speed manual box (if manuals are your thing) and the facelift looks. Although the odd pre-facelift jap import may have SI drive...

Thanks for the advice gents. ended up with a 6MT SI Drive and its bloody good fun. The 6 speed is wicked!
