Well its telling you what pressure the ntake manifold is seeing. If you know what it normally sits at then you know when somethings wrong. I don't think you'll find anyone on here who would think getting one is a bad idea.

For what you're describing you really do want to have some accurate numbers and not just guestimates to confirm whats happening

Ok so at the moment you're trying to diagnose a problem which may not even exist

Get a gauge on it, and see if there is even anything wrong at all

Sure you may not need a gauge to tell that its different to normal, but it'll be practically impossible for anyone on here to diagnose without knowing what its doing, any suggestions can only be wild stabs in the dark.

Yup I'll just fish out the Subaru Service Manual for this model and look up "not getting much of a kick from the second turbo"

Because that is a diagnostic term.

Ok, possible things:

-Bad plugs

-Bad fuel

-ECU going sad

-Bad injectors

-Dirty injectors

-Bad coil

-Low voltage

-Coolant temperature sensor

-Cam position sensor

-Blocked cat

-Collapsed muffler

-Pre-turbo exhaust leak

-Exhaust oxygen sensor

-Primary turbo failure

-Secondary turbo failure

-Vaccuum leak

-Stuck/bad solenoid in BBOD

-Exhaust actuator diaphragm leak

-Seized actuator

-Head gasket

-Piston failure

EDIT:

-Fuel pump

-Fuel filter

-Fuel pressure regulator

-Knock sensor

Mmm check all of those and see if it fixes it.

I've had a few of those replaced already like the plugs, knock sensor, and fuel pump. Should any of the things you listed trigger a check engine light?
