gearbox swap..

enquiring as to any difficulties i could come across speedo wise, install 2001 gtb 4.11 gearbox/ rear diff combo into my 1990 bf5 gt..

car was running a 4.44 gearbox/ rear diff combo, but I've already removed both..

1990 g/box code: TY752VB1AA

2001 g/box code:TY754VBBBA

any shared knowledge would be much appreciated.. thanks..

First issue is going to be that your BF5 probably has a cable driven speedo, and the 2001 probably has a hall-effect vehicle speed sensor. I have no idea if they are interchangeable.

Yea speedo fittings can be changed in-between boxes.

 

I have a memory of breaking the cable driven one getting it out due to being old/brittle so be careful.

5 Speeds are all very similar

 

I understand Later have 8x bolt Bellhousings and you'll probably only have 4x? 

 

6x Speeds are different length? (use Auto Driveshaft?

 

I'm sure there's a sensor solution written on the forums somewhere

 

again newest Subaru I've owned  was a 98 BG5, and I've never got that Mechanical

Front axles maybe - Seem to remember some RS had female inner axle cv. Check inner CV on axle and box for male/female. From my experience you'd want to use the GT axles and make the inner CV's work with whatever suits the gearbox.

Have gone through drama's recently with a bc5 where one front axle was binding due to being too long (was a brand new replacement listed for the car, but the same part number across everything pre 99 or so). Tried about 3 different combinations before we found one that worked & that was an axle shaft out of another RS. May have had something to do with being 6sp as well.

 

And if it was me - Replace the shifter bushes (I'm sure there is a write up on here)

gearbox swap was straight forward, only problem I had was with 4.11 rear diff and half shafts that came with it..

2001rear diff half shafts were longer and male into diff were as bf5 4.44 rear diff had push in stubs..

removed 4.44 diff internal cage thing, swapped ring gears 4.44 to 4.11 so i could use existing diff stubs and half shafts that were on bf5 if that makes sense..

all works mint..
