Turbo with hairline cracks?

looking at this turbo on trade me, do the hair cracks really not matter like he says or will/would it cause problems now or future?

really really common issue for vf30's unfortunately. Finding a replacement housing could be difficult

if exhaust housing has cracks, it will expand and contract with heat.. so won't it be distorted? the clearances between the housing and the blades must be fairly fine eh?

I had a hairline crack on my VF30 and it was in very good condition otherwise. Ran very well, and I believe the person I sold it to had no issues too. But perhaps for piece of mind you should find one without. But then again, it may not be long until the one you get does exactly the same thing without you knowing. I've spoken to a mechanic that works on subarus alot, and he says nearly all VF30's he pulls off customer cars have this crack.

but then if you weld it up it should stop it?

welding up any cast steel properly ain't easy, and depending on the type and/or quality of steel not possible at all, more so when its going to subjected to harsh conditions-high heat.

There is a VF34 going cheap with cracks in the exhaust housing. Is it possible to just chuck the exhaust housing off a VF24 on? Would it be an easy thing to do?

What he forgets to mention is its off a rally car so a good chance of anti lag flogging the bearings

Every case is different but if your buying a turbo off TM you really need to inspect it in person to check the bearings - or buy off someone you trust.

The rally teams life turbos to only 1000km then put on a new one.

Race ones are generally in better shape.
