BLOWN V4 STI TYPE R- ANY HELP?

Guest

Recommended Posts

ONLY HAPPENED LAST WEEK SO STILL NOT SURE WHY. BUT BASICALLY HAVE A HOLE ON TOP OF MY ENGINE BLOCK ABOVE THE THIRD CYLINDER WITH A CLEAR VIEW OF THE CRANK AND A BROKEN CON ROD!

Just wanted any advise people have on what to do to get the best out of this financially.

does anyone have a block to suit? should i replace the whole motor? should i try and sell as is?

everything is mint,

90,000km, tight gearbox, turbo great, mint exterior and interior, really is a decent example of one so dont know if people would buy it as is for a semi decent price or if i should try and fix it first and then sell?

I know how that feels man, i snapped a rod was lucky it didnt pop out the block but still block was stuffed beyond use as well as everything inside it.

Either buy a v7 Sti short block from wingers

Forged motor

2nd hand motor

All depends on how much you want ot spend and what you want to do with the car??

hey can you tell us more about the car and its history, always keen to hear why this might have happend.

i.e.

- any mods (air filter, bigger Turbo, BOV, boost controller, computer, zaust etc etc)

- what boost did it run

- what petrol do you use

- was it serviced, if so how often

- was it serviced by the last owner

- what oil is used

- was the fuel filter changed at any time

- any symtoms leading up to the engine blowing (noises, smoke, poor performance etc)

- how nicely do/did you drive it

- did you let the car warm up before you boosted it

- did the last owner drive it like a twat

- did it happen under boost

cheers

cheers gives me heaps to think about. was a big weekend so didnt do much thinking about it!

yeah i knew i had to just replace the engine, obviously no money in selling as is aye...plenty of working type r sti's on the road.

for everyone who asked how it was maintained etc.

90,000km's

serviced every 10,000km with an oil change every 5,000km.

no mods besides full exhaust from turbo and air filter.

had just put parallel fuel lines in so i could start working it up a little, drove the car around 3,000km on the new lines so confident it wasnt a lean issue.

wasnt thrashing it at the time doing 110kmh in 5th going over the bridge in greenhithe.

and i generally dont thrash the shit out of my car everywhere i go either, i take it out for a thrash every so often but most of the time just drive it nice, nothing it wasnt built for anyway!

so comes to me as a pretty big mystery and my mate who is a mechanic, cant quite get why it happened at such low k's etc, guess the engine is still 12 years old...but pretty average excuse!

o yeah, always let it warm up and the other thing was absolutely no noise leading up to it either, just a bang! my girlfriend was in the car thought i had hit something, coz after the bang there was s scraping sound and then nothing it just ran on three till i could pull over! ha ha. amazed it kept running to be honest

All these era STi / GTB engines seem to have an average life of about 100,000km before the big end goes. Some last longer.

You never know how well they were treated by the previous owner.

Bad gas, poor oil / service, driving too hard cold, poor mods over time slowly wears away the big ends. Then one day abit of stress and bang. Quite often u hear of them going whilst going at 50km/h

Ej207 from subaru + v4 heads might be the cheapest option - if you plan on keeping it for a long time.

Else secondhand engine and sell.

hmmm so a later version motor is going to last longer?

classic aye, coz i had a v3 wrx with a vf22 on it to bring it up to sti output, it did 180,000km's with no problems, my mate got it at 100,000km and sold it to me at 150k. same mods as my one now and probily still going!

The stock EJ207 has proven to be better than an stock EJ20K. I mention it as an option as u can buy shortblocks new from Subaru. And its capable of more power than most people will ever push it.

There have been people with STi's and GTBs do 200,000km as well... Its an average thing

FWIW a WRX engine is less stressed by the nature of its tune.

It could also been well looked after for its first 100,000km. STi's by there nature are given more abuse.

For all you know back in Japan your STi could have had many track days, touge races etc.

And the WRX the daily commute in Tokyo...

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
