Whats my problem????

Recommended Posts

Hello again fellow clubsubbers,

Ok here's the thing, sometimes I cant hook first gear - there's just nothing there, it kind of goes half in, it only happens very rarely but if I hook reverse straight away (which it will do with no probs) it slips right back into 1st easy peasy, I get the feeling this isnt a gearbox prob more likely a clutch issue but I'm no trained mechanic (clutch is only about 20,000kms old), I would like to just take it into the shop but due to the Chch quake Im rather limited to what I can get to :(

Any ideas peoples?

seems to be normal on a subaru box :) not quite engaging first, having to engage reverse first seems to be very common, i would not worry about it, ass u could spend alot of time/money trying to fix something not fixable :)

check clutch fluid and slave cylinder - I found a wee hole in the line between each was leaking fluid at about 180,000 kms

Yeah have done that, I bled it maybe 25,000kms ago and it was bloody dirty and has got that way again but has never used any, mite give it another wee bleed over the weekend and see what happens :)

But yeah I agree with ya's might just be another one of those "typical subaru traits"

What if your say sitting there and you cant get 1st . If you just let the clutch out in neutral and then push it back in then go for 1st ? If it goes in that would to me indicate the 1st gear synchro is a bit worn . . . Does it go into 1st easily when rolling ? By letting out the clutch and putting it back in your spinning the shaft in the gear box which would position it in a different spot where maybe the teeth just line up . . . .

yea i wouldnt say it goes in any easier when trying that trick man, you've stil got to argue with it, and nah it wont always go in with it rolling either.

Bloody confusing stuff aye, i just get the feeling if i take it to a gearbox shop because of the quake every company will want the money and convince me i need a gearbox rebuild

  • 2 weeks later...

dog boxs dont run synchros...theyre an all together different beast...

the standard gearboxs do run synchros on 1st gear...easy way to tell is be rolling forward...can you select 1st gear?? yup they have a synchro on it LOL... if a box is worn out you can sometimes hear the synchro whine when selecting 1st while rolling... my old gearbox did this before it blew :)

pretty dam sure it would or youd never ber able to get into first without grinding it LOL some gearboxs have a double cone synchro??

1st and reverse are straight cut gears

the rest are synchro

EDIT:

Here is some symptoms and resolutions:

Symptom Possible cause Remedy

1. Gears are difficult to intermesh.

NOTE:

The cause for difficulty in shifting gears

can be classified into two kinds: one is

malfunction of the gear shift system and

the other is malfunction of the transmission.

However, if the operation is heavy

and engagement of the gears is difficult,

defective clutch disengagement may

also be responsible. Check whether the

clutch is correctly functioning, before

checking the gear shift system and

transmission.

(a) Worn, damaged or burred chamfer of

internal spline of sleeve and reverse

driven gear

Replace.

(b) Worn, damaged or burred chamfer of

spline of gears

Replace.

© Worn or scratched bushings Replace.

(d) Incorrect contact between synchronizer

ring and gear cone or wear

Correct or replace.

2. Gear slips out.

I Gear slips out when coasting on

rough road.

I Gear slips out during acceleration.

(a) Defective pitching stopper adjustment Adjust

(b) Loose engine mounting bolts Tighten or replace.

© Worn fork shifter, broken shifter fork

rail spring

Replace.

(d) Worn or damaged ball bearing Replace.

(e) Excessive clearance between splines

of synchronizer hub and synchronizer

sleeve

Replace.

(f) Worn tooth step of synchronizer hub

(responsible for slip- out of 3rd gear)

Replace.

(g) Worn 1st driven gear, needle bearing

and race

Replace.

(h) Worn 2nd driven gear, needle bearing

and race

Replace.

(i) Worn 3rd drive gear and bushing Replace.

(j) Worn 4th drive gear and bushing Replace.

(k) Worn reverse idler gear and bushing Replace.

3. Unusual noise comes from transmission.

NOTE:

If an unusual noise is heard when the

vehicle is parked with its engine idling

and if the noise ceases when the clutch

is disengaged, it may be considered that

the noise comes from the transmission.

(a) Insufficient or improper lubrication Lubricate or replace with specified oil.

(b) Worn or damaged gears and bearings

NOTE:

If the trouble is only wear of the tooth

surfaces, merely a high roaring noise will

occur at high speeds, but if any part is

broken, rhythmical knocking sound will

be heard even at low speeds.

Replace.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
