Lost half of my boost?

Guest

Recommended Posts

Hey,

V7 Impreza WRX wagon.

Was speeding up while leaving town in 3rd gear and the boost guage was reading

about 0.8ish bar (not flat foot so it still had more to go) and then i felt it drop to 0.5bar

and now it wont boost over that?

It pulls fine untill it hits 0.54bar then just stays constant at that?

Can get it up to about 1.07bar max usualy.

Let me know where to start looking if you can :) Or somebody give me the bad news.. :(?

Cheers

Well i had it all booked into the shop today where they were going to do a diagnostic check or test? But then

when i went to drive in this morning my car starting running fine again, so i decided ill save myself the $110 and not go to the shop.

But then on the way home from work this afternoon it started doing it again, but it doesnt do it ALL the time, around town when id boost off sometimes in would climb to what it would normaly but then when i left town it wouldnt go above the 0.5BAR.

It would act weird more then it would act normal.

I tryed reading through the forum on how to check my car myself but got really really confused..?

Any ideas? or do i need to try that forum about the CEL codes or whatever is it? :(

Thanks

Take your car into a subaru specialist workshop and get it looked at, a $110 scan is cheaper than a $4000 engine. Your engine is going into limp mode and dropping boost down to 0.5 bar for a reason. Its more than likely detonating or pinking due to a fault.

Iv had the scan done this morning, no error codes etc. They think a good place to start will be to

put on the original B.O.V back on, he reakons that they usually cause trouble. The B.O.V i have on there now

is about 12ish months old, GFB Hybrid WRX model, and is set to 50/50, atmosphere/re-circ. Personally i dont think

thats the problem because its been running fine since i put it on.

Any more thoughts on this please? Not sure where to go from here, replave the B.O.V i guess..

Thanks alot

If the hose between the boost control solenoid and air intake became blocked this would happen. But it would stay blocked, not randomly unblock for no apparent reason.

Run 98 (if not better, just don't use avgas), and get some of that Subaru Upper Engine Cleaner into it (if it hasn't been done in living memory). I haven't had any experience with the cleaner, but it's supposed to work well.

*edit: Spelling and missed a few words*

What fuel you using?

Have allways used 95, can not get 98 or anything else in Taranaki, but have been running this fine for

about a year now?

Is that hose able to be taken off and checked? Will buy some of that cleaner tonight when i pick up my car, saw it in the shop when i droped it off.

Not really impressed at all with the service im getting from the place where its at now, they seem to know nothing about subaru's at all even though they are ment to be specialists.. Going to ask around where else i can take it to get it looked at again. If anyone here is from Taranaki let me know who does your work for you. Cheers.

Yes it can be checked. Locate the boost control solenoid. It will have three air lines going to it. One will be connected to a boost source (Usually turbocharger outlet, occasionally after the intercooler), another will go to the wastegate actuator, and the last will go to the air intake between the air flow meter and the turbocharger.

As for checking it, remove it (the last one, the one that goes to the air intake) at the boost controller end. You should be able to blow through. On some cars there is a restrictor in there, so it might be a little difficult, but if you have to blow so hard that your cheeks hurt, it's considered blocked.

Have you ever run an octane booster in the car? If you have a half empty bottle lying around, try it.

Also try cleaning your air mass meter with a can of brake kleen, they do get dirty if you haven't changed your air filter in a while and can send incorrect readings back to the ecu causing the engine to lean out and go into limp mode.

Will try checking that ASAP, have never run octane booster or have any around.

Where would that little thing be hidden? Thanks :)

Also i brought a can of Upper Engine cleaner, the proper subaru stuff from the subaru shop and i get how to do it apart from one of the directions 2. With igition OFF remove convenient vacuum hose from intake manifold and spray.. I have no idea where thing hose is? any help again would be great thanks guys :)

The air mass meter/ airflow meter is on the intake pipe before the air box or air filter, just pull off the vacuum hose to the blow off valve and spray the upper ungine cylinder cleaner into it following the instructions on the can.

I recommend that you use 98 fuel, my version 7 wagon detonates on 95 octane and its totally stock standard. if I floor it in 3rd gear I can hear it.. but not in 1st and 2nd.. running on 98 I don't get this issue. for the extra $4 or so for a tank of gas its cheap insurance :)

Yeah id like to use 98 but i cant get it in Taranaki, ANYWHERE. closest place i can get it is about a tanks worth of petrol away :(.. what noise can you hear exactly, maybe i should be listening out for this or is it quiet ovious? Cheers :)

Try using some octane boost with the 95?

Just because it says 95 octane on the gas station fuel pump does not mean its 95 octane.

Some gas stations fuel can sit around for ages. I have seen tests of fuel where 95 might be only 93 or 91 octane. This will cause the ecu to cut the boost down-try using octane booster if you cant get 98 (I NEVER USE 95 OCTANE) because even 98 has been tested as low as 95. If octane booster does not fix it then its not the fuel.

-If its an import it was designed to run on 100 octane.

-Or your boost solenoid might be dead and stuck open then it will only run about 0.5bar-7-8 pounds? but I dont think they give much trouble??

-also might what to check your fuel filter. Euro cars get a new fuel filter ever 40,000km. Most people never change there fuel filter or if they do at 100,000km

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
