VF30 help

STiNGR

Recommended Posts

New to the whole subaru scene so go easy. Got a 1999 wrx wagon non sti. Just brought a VF30 for it. What is it that I will need to upgrade and look out for when putting this turbo in. The car has 440cc injectors, full system, v7 sti fuel pump, apexi pod etc etc. Also what oil should I be running? What type of performance increase am I looking at? Finally what are the pros and cons of doing this turbo upgrade??

If u usin the stock boost controll setup and Ecu then don't worry much abt upgrading anything else

Have seen a few mates upgrade and there was a better pul from the bigger turbo and the stock Ecu still managed to keek things in check

In fact there was a article abt same upgrade by The rigoli brothers workshop in a magazine and they had a vf22 swap and things were still good

They have the video on utube abt it as wel

Was a good upgrade

sti pump should be all good, personally i'd go for a new walbro for piece of mind. only issues I think you'd have would be if you tried to wind the boost up a touch after doing it, ecu may have a right fit.

in saying that, i'd love to do a vf30 swap in my forrie, and you're right, they are bloody hard to find. good luck!!!!

i upgraded to this turbo on my 1996 sti RA, did have the 23 on there, deffinatly think the vf30 is an upgrade. but yea 1989 rs got it, you deffinatly need the oil feeds off the vf30, the oil feed for the vf30 is HUGE compared to 22,23,24 etc haha let us know how you go.

Sweet, Wont be doing it till the new year. The car is a daily so I cant have it sitting goin nowhere, Need to put a external on 1st as it has the internal gate welded. As Im new to subaru's where coould i pick up one of them oil feed lines etc?

probably cheaper/easier to find a rear exhaust housing and use the internal wastegate, only a vf30 will fit though as a vf30 is thrust bearing.

otherwise a you can get a cheapish uppipe from STA in auckland, the M&H pipes and wastegates are ok quality for a cheap product, then you'd only need to get the wastegate vent plumbed back to your downpipe. probably still cost $400+ to do, so not such a cheap turbo after all

has anyone mentioned these are prone to cracking the housing on the exhaust side yet?

check it carefully once you get it

True that. If you spray the inside of the exhaust housing with CRC then give it a wee while to dry, then look very carefully for hairline cracks extending outwards from the wastegate opening. The CRC will soak into the cracks and highlight them for you. Kinda like poor-mans NDT.

just drill the banjos out to 1.8mm plenty heaps for a 30.

Really?? cause the banjo bolt that comes with the vf30 has like a 5mm hole running all the way through it.. my old vf23 had only 1 hole that was like 1.5-2mm big. defiantly dont think it would have been big enough to provide adequate oil.

chances are that they all cracked. best to just get something like a P20 or another P18 from different VF serious and get it modify by steven from MSE to fit or give up and get a similar STI turbo

edit; sorry half asleep while writing that lastnight haha

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
