If a pod flowed better why doesn't every car come from the manufacturer with one fitted?

For a standard to mildly modded car i bet your KW would go down if you just whipped out the standard airbox and whacked a poddie on...

Didnt on my MR2, I wish I had the $$ at the time to do a dyno, but in deciding to go from K&N panel to Simota Pod, I swapped them back n forth and went for drives in the same day.

Pod made car more responsive in throttle and power felt smoother from mid to high range.

heylin - quit harping on 'oh i did this on my mr2'...

you're asking about subaru mods on a subaru forum from guys that know what they're talking about . If you ask peoples opinion then listen to what they're telling you.

the mr2 bleeting is grinding my gears. this and your other thread(S)

pure and simple the factory airbox and filter if you can run it is proven time and time again to net identical hp in factory to medium levels of modification.

Good old reliable seat of the pants meter. Never seen one of those be wrong ;)

Now to throw the cat among the pigeons doesn't being a hotwire AFM mean oiled or none is meaningless as the wire superheats at the end of each use effectively cleaning the wire? I have been told that by more than one reputable source now.

Also vibration = AFM killer. If you go pod make sure its tighter than (insert sexual inuendo here) and your chances of it surviving seem to go up significantly.

FYI I run a pod with no airbox (yet) but no gaurd liner either, air flow is pretty free but I have no doubt I have a couple of lost ponys due to engine bay temp. Long term plan is an intake from the spotlight position direct into an airbox around pod.

I ran a Zeroports intake kit on my BE5. This included the stainless mesh Pod. After a few weeks driving I took the intake pipe off for some reason and notice how much dust and crap was lined on the pipe. While the induction noise was cool for about 5 mins, ended up putting the factory box back on and used a Fram paper air filter. I would have gotten about 5x filters for the price on a single K&N. Dyno proven that only an extra 2kw from using a mess filter.

*I dont even use K&N on my current 4x4 as any oiled type just clogs up very quickly driving on the road where I live. Standard toyota paper filter with a "outterwear" cover

LOL im still letting go :) give me time.

I may end up running the Simota for a year then switch back to the stock filter, main reason for me is the car is too quiet for my liking, not wanting to harp on but the MR2 made all those neat noises (induction, bov, exhaust note) was a barrage on the senses, I think a sports car needs to be a little less sedate.

I may grow up one day :) but not yet.

if it was anything like my gt4 celica, it'll have a flapper gate maf, so it really doesn't matter whats on the end of it. hot wire maf's in the subbies vs flapper gate mafs in some of the gt4's is like comparing cow s**t with unicorns.

ie, no comparison :P

Dont get me wrong. for certain applications they are a must. and i like the sensory assult as much as the next guy. 108dB at 2500rpm is grand

Just when your asking about performance stuff listen to what the other guys are telling you. they all know what works abd whats unneccessary for a lightly modified car. if you want sensory assult then dont sugar coat it :)

K&N pod filter was one of my first mods & never killed an AFM along with a bov, A/M siamese down pipe & manderal bent exhaust.

Also used a large simota pod, both worked well for me,

in the end its your car your money. nothing wrong with changing things around here & there a few times

  • 2 weeks later...

Ran the first tank of gas through using the new filter.

one open road trip from Hamilton to Tauranga return, the rest round town driving. Filled tank to brim and took kms reading.

10.8L per 100 km

Which is 0.5L per 100km lower than our last best average. Equates to a 3% fuel saving, which ive found on most of my cars when running a higher flowing filter and exhaust.

^^ be interesting to see long term results. Have only ever run factory airbox, OEM filter and plumbing world snorklectomy (cold air feed from spotlight area) in my subies, However the K&N pod i ran in my 540i for a while hurt both fuel consumption and SOP power. The factory airbox had a direct cold air feed from the front of the car, therefore would have comparable efficiency to my soob airbox.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
