Turbo Back Exhaust Tuning

Hi,

New to all this modifications etc! I have a 2001 Wrx Impreza, EJ20.

I want to install a "TURBO BACK EXHAUST".

1) Does it need to be tuned?

2) Can i tune myself if possible and is there CONS and PROS doing it myself?

3) What if i do not tune the car. What can happen?

I have a TBE on an untuned factory ECU. Has run like this for over two years and been thrashed a lot. It runs rich and occasionally pops on overrun which I gather is not good for the turbo.

2001.... Bug eye? If so, these ecu's can be reflashed. Only gains to be had from reflashing... If running tbe, you run the risk of overboosting due to a drop in backpressure

no big deal. there are benefits to be had just from a tune though. talk to pappu everyone seems happy with his work

If you've still got a factorycatted downpipe they are quite restrictive, if you get a is quality downpipe with no cat you'll find it frees things up abit and you may see an extra psi of boost.

Thats what I found on a v5 going from a factory catted downpipe to a 2.5 inch rage one.

Both setups had the same exhaust system which is a fujitsubo jasma spec exhaust.

Ran my car for bout 8 months with it on before i tuned no harm done computer compensated for the extra psi and ran rich a tune would do you good whack in a fuel pump and your away are you sti or not?

not likely to do harm as long as factory O2 position's are retained, this is VERY important I am told. Will run rich unless tuned and big gains are to be made from tuning (reflash)

is yours a sti on wrx?

to answer the questions:

1 - no not really need to retune as the ecu will compensate for the extra flow (see notes at end of post)

2 - yes u can.

pro - its not too expensive to do and u will have fun

con - u mess it up = not fun blowing ur engine and whole lot more expensive (not scaring u but thats happened to few ppl)

3 - nothing - the ecu will compensate for the new setup

notes:

i have done the exact same test on few v7

stock power = 170-175kw

modified with full turbo back and front mount (stock tune) = 180-185kw

retuned on mods = 205-210kw

the tuned setup acctually had less knock and was better at fuel economy as well

Sorry to Barge in but I wanted to know if a 3" FULL SYSTEM IS BETTER THAN A 2.5" SYSTEM , What are the diffrence's and what is reccomended, on a v7 sti vf 30 turbo ..

from whats been posted up on cs the down pipe is the important bit you can still make 300kw with a 2.5" cat back.

for a vf30 - the 2.5" will give same output as a 3"

2.5 will be quieter i suppose so less cop hassle is a bonus if u want that kinda stuff

yep pretty much true for almost all suby ecu that i know of

the newer ones seem to have better "learning" but with the older ones putting exhausts and no tune seems to work perfectly fine

If it was a WRX with a TDo5 turbo I would go 2.5inch if sti then 3inch

Tdo5 is a largish turbo but I 3 inch every car I have had thats been turbo

ah sorry that was a typo, meant to say tdo4 as fitted to the non sti wrx for as long as I can remember
