Decent Oil and Filter?

Leese

Recommended Posts

Hey Team,

Being that it's a fricken long time since I've owned a turbo car, I'm not sure what oil would be best for my 2000 Legacy B4.

She's due for an oil and filter change in 800kms, so just wondering what you guys recommend?

Also - does anyone know what oil filter she needs?

Cheers,

Leese

Sup Leese, Just use a Genuine Subaru Oil Filter for ya car and i use Elf Competition GT 10W40 Oil in my car. Everyone on here has differing opinions on what oil to use etc etc. But i find Elf oils really good. 8)

+1 for Genuine filter. And avoid Fram filters like the plague.

I also use Elf Competition 10w40 in both my road legacy and my rally car.

Sublab recommend Magnatec 5w30 but it isn't available off the shelf.

For an off the shelf oil, I've been told to use Castrol Edge 5w30 (but I haven't actually tried it yet).

In theory, the B4's take 4.5L of oil and I believe the Castrol Edge bottles are 5L.

You can pick up the genuine filters for about $20 from Subaru (it often helps to mention Clubsub if you go to Winger Subaru Greenlane).

I'd definitely recommend changing the oil every 5000k in the turbos too.

I've never had any issues with Fram filters. I sold them for years with no problems at all. These days pretty much all I fit is genuine filters, but if I can't get a genuine filter, then I'll fit Fram.

As for oil, my personal choice is Total Quartz 9000 10w50. Its an SM rated fully synthetic. I use that as its slightly thicker and the engine is quieter as a result, the engine doesn't use any (it drinks 5w30!!), its available from Winger Greenlane, and I have a dislike for Castrol Magnatec. Its pretty reasonably priced too. Oh yeah, and its a 5L pack. ;D

SAME! I use to use FRAM filters before and I had no problems with them in my car.. the bonus is they have grippy adhesive on the filter itself to aid in removal and tightening of the unit. Whereas the Genuine doesn't.

Ive just seen horror stories on the usmb of fram oil filters exploding. The guys on "Bobistheoilguy.com" seem to hate the construction of them also.

I too have heard horror stories as a result of cardboard being the main component of the inside of fram filters. However, I have only heard of this being an issue in race cars, not so sure about road cars.

Either way, I use Elf Competition as thats what STi Japan recommend and whats used by some seriously highly strung cars in the NZ Production Car series. If it can handle that, I reckon its good enough for use in my lowly RS Legacy rally car :)

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
