Turbo's not boosting, replaced BOV

EY! I am a total Subie N00bie, and I just bought a 99 BH5 JDM Legacy GT Automatic( I am from NZ ).

The car threw a Check Engine Light and the "VDC off" Light was on too, upon hard acceleration ( when it hit 5500RPM)...

I cruised to a halt, and shut the engine off. after that, i restarted it. The lights disappeared after that...

I took the car to a diagnostician, and he said the turbo's weren't spooling and the computer gave off three error codes, two code 66 ( apparently deals with the twin turbo system) and a code 32 ( O2 sensor) ... he cleared the codes, and it didn't return. But one thing for sure, it isn't boosting at all... the turbo's are spinning but no boost. I even swapped the BOV around (which was misdiagnosed as faulty, so i have an extra part now...), yet no boost...... what is my problem?

get some soapy water in a spray bottle and run the motor and squirt the soapy water around all your boost pipes and intake pipes and check for boost leaks, also if you have exhaust leaks at turbos the wont go as well due to leaking exhaust gases got any exhaust gase smell? also vacuum lines not connected correctly.

Your problem is in the twin turbo system (simple aye!).

You need to take it to someone who knows the workings of the twin turbo system and let them spend a few hours on it. Its not a simple system and there are many things to check. Don't expect a cheap fix though.

^ thanks for the quick replies! will do the soapy thing first thing in the morning... and i know... the fix isn't going to be cheap... though the car seems to run fine.. just no "oomph"....... will it run fine if i just let it be? no potential problems later ( sacrilege, i know.... but i am a little tight atm and am a student.... got suckered into buying it :P

Find a new mechanic

That's cowboy stuff

As Boostin said you need to take the car to someone who knows the opertaion of twin turbo systems

Probably the only basic check you can do is make sure the primary turbo waste gate isn't stuck open

and that the exhaust control valve is shut

Lol go kick your mechanic in the balls because hes a retard if he thinks thats an acceptable repair.

TT system is a pain in the ass to work with - take it to someone who knows what they are doing or you run the risk of expensive things breaking

nah.. he didn't say it was an acceptable repair, he did that to show me that there was boost, and that there shouldn't have been any vacuum in that tube.....

I got my mechanic to pull off the intercooler and now i think i may have found the main problem. one of the turbos aren't spinning......

dsc00164o.th.jpg the left turbo isn't spinning... is it the primary/ or secondary?

your photo links are screwy, i think both are link to the same photo..

turbos arent spining.. ummm i wouldnt be driving that anywhere. take it to someone that reallllly knows subbies.

The left as you look at the photos is your primary, so make sense that if its jammed (god help that turbo) then it wont spool the secondary either -

I believe on this model - the left drivers side turbo is the secondary. Had an interesting conversation with nzkaos the other day and he corrected me

oh my bad.. your right.. the passenger side is the primary same as the BG's, and drivers side the secondary.

still wouldnt move the car an inch

edit: just talking to keltik - were you just looking to see if it spun or did you try it by hand (and spin the turbine). the secondary only works from 4500rpm ish thanks to the exhaust control vavle.

it's gonna cost me a ton of money eh? :( ahhahahahahhaha oh well.

time to ramp up the MLM sales..

so the primary is flowing... but the secondary isn't? the rpm the car was tested to was err... 4000 ish... would that mean that the secondary isn't kickin in?

any hoo... will the car still be ok if i stick to low rpm driving ( less than 3000) ? i really need the car and cannot afford to send the car to Ideal Cars just yet....

The secondary will only spool up when the exhaust control valve opens, and the ECU wont open that unless certain load and rpm conditions are met. So unless you actually popped the intake pipe off and checked to see if it seized, i wouldnt panic yet. Its much more likely theres a broken vac line thats stopping the twin turbo system working right which is why your not getting any boost.

im not even totally sure if that value opens with no load on the engine kicking over the secondary. id think youd need +5000rpm to see any movement in the secondary, but you should be able to freely turn it (carefully) with your finger if you can see the compressor side.

You need to take it to a professional - if for no other reason than them telling you what is broken so you can decide to keep driving it or park it up. As said the TT's are real complicated. Just guessing is its ok in the mean time is a bad idea.

what keltic just said....

My B4 wont normally hit the second turbo till around 5k, also with the soapy water, I've been told to use brake cleaner for it too apparently works well.

If your not getting the CEL to come on I wouldn't think it would be the bov, I had a faulty secondary on mine that got replaced and didn't have the CEL come on anymore when using the 2nd turbo.

If you really keen try taking on the open road and taking up to say 6k. You should feel the the secondary.

I would recommend checking the turbo first tho incase it is ceased. Wouldn't be to good for it if it was and your putting all that air into it :P

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
