Changing Gearbox Oil

caspros

Recommended Posts

So after my recent expedition to Manfield, I've developed a mildly graunchy 3rd and 5th when changing gears under load.

I find this odd as the gearbox was rebuilt less than 5,000km ago, but, I thought I'd have a go at changing the oil before trying anything else.

Can someone point in the right direction of what bolts where to do this ? I've googled but can't find the exact location of them.

It's a V5 STI RA w/ DCCD.

Thanks !

Oh sweet ! That's exactly what I wanted to know. Can you point me in the direction of where the oil is supposed to be put in after ? Should I just splash it around randomly and hope some goes in ;D

LOL.. I find the random splash method the most fun...

peice of cake, theres a big drain plug at the front of the gearbox, its a 22mm from memory, undo that let drain for quite a while, then refill with oil through the dipstick tube, this can be a cunt cause you have to fill it quite slowly or it just overflows lol.

should take 4 litres. and make sure you use a GL-5 rated gear oil as per manufacturers recommendations. hope that helps ya.

Redline gear oil can help

It could be on the track your gear oil was getting abit thin with the extra heat thus causing problems

Yep, I think Reline 75/90 was what I see most people are using. Thanks for the all the advice everyone, and Jon I may hit you up on that. I'm guessing the 22mm bolt is hard to get to ? Or just an extension on a ratchet will do ?

the plug is really easy to get to, its right on the bottom of the box, facing the road, you cant miss it, you wont need an extension, i just used a spanner and mallet to get them at work.

That's the plug for the oil to drain out of though right ? What about the one to fill it ?

Or is the fill one on the side aswell ?

the way to refill is through the gearbox dipstick tube which is on the drivers side between turbo and under intercooler kind of. that is the only way to fill these gearboxes, which is why you will need to fill slowly as air tries to get back up the tube as you fill lol.

most other manufacturers have a fill plug on the side of the box for easy re-filling but for some reason subaru decided they didnt need one.

Ha ha ha, so there's a dipstick tube ? Jeez, what a novice. Well that makes it all easier. For some reason I thought it would be like changing the diff oil.

lol yea theres a dipstick tube. also when you drain it i would give it about 30min at least of draining, the bulk of it will come out straight away but i know from doin mine that if you leave it draining for ages about another half a litre will come out.

I also jack the car up via the diff, that also helps get it out quicker ;D

I tried Redline MT90 as a cure for a 2nd gear crunch on my Skyline and it didn't help. Be careful what type of oil you choose as Redline have a few different types available.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
