Buying a V8 Or V9 Sti

lunchie

Recommended Posts

Hey guys im kinda new to club sub but im thinking seriously about buying a version 8 or 9 sti and im just wanting to ask a few questions.

First of does anyone on here own either? if so feel free to pm me your thoughts on the car, eg performance vs other models you may have owned, reliability (this is the main reason im looking at an 8 or 9 instead of a 4-6)

Also im wondering how bad the fuel economy is around town? I used to own a 1990 single turbo legacy and I think I saw only about 300-330kms per tank around town.

Finally and most importantly, what are the specific differences between a version 8 and 9 , does either model have any known weaknesses or common maintainence issues.

What sort of price should i expect to pay privatly/yard for either model.

Any feedback would be great guys as Im hoping to make a purchase of either model fairly soon.

Cheers

Lunchie

Sure you don't want an immaculate v10? http://www.clubsub.org.nz/forum/index.php?topic=2402.0 ;)

Haven't driven an 8 or 9, but i'm told 9's are pretty similar to the 10's... fuel economy-wise i can get practically 10L/100km with a combination of driving style (open road, around town, air-con on, and a 5 minute blast on a windy backroad). It's often close to that economy wise but usually slightly "worse".

I've heard the later models (8/9/10) are very reliable, and have certainly not had any problems with mine although it's very low km's still. If you treat it nice and get regular services you shouldn't have much trouble.

I would estimate aiming for $25k-$30 price range, obviously the 8 in the bottom of the range and 9 towards the top.

better suspension setup (like the v8 spec c) and more choice of availble wheels for the future possibly

More wrong knowledge.... the Ver9 adopted the wider wheelbase of the spec c, not the whole suspension setup.

just sold my V8STI after 140,000k from new. No mechanical dramas. Be wary of 'clunky' difs. If you abuse the manual setting of the DCCD you can stuff things.

yeah i read that section about the dccd, From what i can tell in a version 8 or 9 you should just keep it in auto mode unless ur on a track (35/65 rear bias) or on snow, 50/50, would this is safe and correct?

is there any danger to buying a jap import one vs a NZ new? any differences? wanky non working stereo etc?

tell the caryard to put a sterio that works in it and never buy a car without a full tank of gas. my car yard removed all my bits from my 04 wrx-ltd and fitted them to my 03 sti.it took them about 8 hours at their cost. they did spotties sterio bov a/m cold air box ,defi gauges and controller turbo timer and alarm and even changed 2 rear wheels before realising they wouldnt fit over the brembos on the fronts hehe. They even sent me through the maramarua bush in their rally car.

V9 beats the V8 hands down:

Spec C front control arms for increased wheelbase and front castor = less understeer

5x114 stud pattern on stronger hubs (apparently the 5x100s on the V8 were weak) with newer lighter forged alloys

Yaw sensor (like AYC on Evos, but shifts power front-rear rather than rear side-side)

Upgraded interior

Widened rear track with fender blister add-ons

This is all pretty substantial stuff which will cost you megabucks to upgrade a V8 to.

does anyone have the exact specifics of the changes made to the DCCD between the 8 and 9?

Agree with everything you're said, they are quite different cars underneath.

The v8 sti hubs are the same as every other weak pre v9 sti subaru hub. Different bearing setup on the v9+ sti's, much more hardcore.

I owned a V9 Sti at one stage. Wouldnt even bother with the V8. ALso the engine was the highest specd out of all the standard STi's: 206Kw and 410nm Interior is the same lay out as the V10 which is much nicer than the V8.

The only prob i had with the V9, how is sounded like a EVO.

interesting my V8 also sounds like an evo but i guess you learn to live with it . buy the way what have you gone into from the v9.v11 perhaps is it the same?

For the money a V8 or V9 will cost, you'd be better off with a V7 RA Spec C i reckon.

You get the suspension mods and...about 250-300kg less weight... ;)

Plus, they got the better engines... :P

and it sounds like a subbie

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
