Bung Starter Motor?

Recommended Posts

This morning i went to go into work, as i turned the car over once, it turned as normal, didn't fire, as normal. When cold first thing in the mornig, it normaly takes 1 to get it moveing, 2 to get it started. Allways been like this.

Tried a second time, and just got a "chuff" noise as i turned the key, no RAR-RAR-RAR, noise like you normally get when turning it over. Continues to make this noise as i turn the key.

I suspect a bung starter motor?

I can't roll the car back so that i can do a roll start or anything, as i live down a steep driveway, and can't roll it back enough to get a good roll on (lightweight car my ASS!!)

Cheers

G

Started sweet as about an hour ago, dunno WTF is up with it.

I assume its on its way out though, will take it apart before i go to CHCH next week and then i can get it sorted without the car off the road for too long.

sounds like what mine was doing. Slame one out of an old non turbo in it - those starters RULE!!

If it just clicks its probably brushes. If it clicks lots after cranking for a couple seconds i'd guess crappy battery terminals or battery

Some times even thats not the problem.

It can be the wire that goes from the ignition switch to the starter can be degraded ( gone green etc). It just doesnt allow enought power to go the solenoid. Some times works sometimes it can play up, and you get those funny noises from the starter.

Had that prob on my Vortex 6. A new wire and relay was put in and it starts every time now. starter was never touched.

The relay was hooked up to the ignition wire and new wire run from the relay to the starter or something simmar.

honestly.....

unbolt the starter... check for burring on the teeth, clean off excess grease. if the teeth are rounded find another starter.

check the earth wires on the starter, also check the earth from the battery to the front of the car.

CHARGE YOUR BATTERY..

also look at gettin brass terminals easy enough swap theyre about $13 from ripco or supersteap.

these will give you better connections and possibly solve your starter issue..

if this doesnt work then im sorry my friend but you have gremlins

Yeah like others are saying don't forget to make sure the battery's all charged up before you start dismantling the starter motor. ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

Starter is simple to swap.

Disconnect battery.

Disconnect the power cable that goes onto the starter (10mm spanner) and unplug the small wire thats next to it.

Unbolt the two bolts that hold it onto the back of the bellhousing (14mm spanner)

Drop it on the floor narrowly missing you foot after its bounced off the gearbox.

Put the new starter in the hole thats left by the old one and do up all the stuff you've just undone.

Reconnect battery and then go do some heli's in the Supermarket carpark to celebrate....

Excellent, sounds fun, now to find a new starter motor. lol

It really sounds like its ceased, as its making the same noise as my fan that ceased when it got wet lol.

Sprayed it with CRC for shits'n'giggles just now, will let it soak then try again.

Really pissed off as i have NO food in the house as i've been away for a bit and its too cold to walk anywhere. Pizza Hutt FTW i think.

At $40 a pop you can go through a lot of second hand ones before you get to the price of a new one. Being pessimistic and ssuming a 1year lifespan for each 2nd hand unit, will they outlive the amount of time you plan on keeping the car?

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
