Part out or repair ?

Iv just bought a 1990 BF5 , Its 5 speed . turbo and only done 119ks.

Its very original and still has the factory engine cover.

Only problem is the rego has lapsed and it needs revinning.

What be your thoughts , should I get it road legal or just part it out ?

It's just a glorified WOF these early ones have to pass. And the GTs (both wagon and sedan) tend to pass no worries, the RS tend to have trouble with being rusty.

Did you have to get old owners details to re register the car? Or did you just take car in as is with no plates? I heard you needed previous owners full details to re register a car and if you dont have it you cant re register the car? thats just what ive heard though.

As someone who has been there and done that. I can tell you it's easy. Work with VTNZ, they'll give you a form. This form needs to be signed and stamped by a police officer at the station to state the vehicle is not of interest to police. Then you can re-register it easy

But what kind of questions are on the form? If they ask for previous owner I wont have it. As previous owner gave me fake details.

You don't fill out the form. VTNZ and the Police fill out the form

Bearing in mind if the car is of interest to police, they may decide you're liable for receipt of stolen property so make sure it's legit BEFORE you buy it. You MUST have the VIN plate still on the car also.

And revin is a piss easy process..

Just fill out the forms get the wofcheck and your good to go..

Check with subypower he has just done the process with an RSRA he bought.

If you paid less than 1500 it's easily worth it. 3-5k for a tidy stock wagon these days

For an old legacy wagon? Good luck. Might be worth it if it's mint and you find an enthusiast, otherwise joe bloggs will buy the BH up the road for $5k instead, or the wrx wagons going for 3-4k

Worst case, if it has more than $1500 in parts value, go with it, worst case is you end up with some epic grass hacking luls for a few months then flick it to recoup your money

Just time, garage space and your wifes patience may all run a bit thin if not revinned - I've parted a car before and you get to a point of going "oh stuff this someone take the lot to get rid of it"

A 90 5 speed turbo wagon tidy and with those km's on it is worth 3-5k easy..

My way of thinking is parting it out is just mean...

If you just bought it as a wreck fine but this sounds like a good one. Why not put it on the market here for a good price and let an enthusiest buy it and do the revin process..

These in tidy condition are becoming rare. And i'm sure a DOBC fan would love to get a good one.

Well picked up "project lichen" today , it certainly has not been cared for , had to put my spare rims on to tow it as all 4 tyres were flat , This is what 6 years parked under a tree does to a BF.

The bumper is good it just needs remounting as it pulled out when we towed it out of the pile of tree branches it was burried in.

And after some hot soapy water and a bit of scrubbing.

Interior seems good , bar a torn speaker cover. Has electric seats and all the electrics work . just wont crank as the starter motor is siezed or stuffed , it just clunks.

Will take to the upholstery with the steam cleaner tommorow.

Give the starter a seriously good smack with something solid, it doesn't take all that much to unseize them.

Sadly no, couldnt sell my wagon which as stock as a rock for 1200

Ive been looking around and some 98-99 BHs are going for about 4k. One up the road the other day on side of road, although automatic with 180km sold for $2.5k. It was tidy too.
