How strong are my rods?

Im moving to Aus soon and have just been inspired to turn my RA into a track car for when i come home.

Its got a fresh rebuild from Auto Tune in Rotorua

They used M & H H beam rods,

What kinda power would they support and how do the fair against Subaru rods?

Theyre STA just a eagle copy I think. Daniel said theyve had them in cars over 400kw though. YMMV as with anything as so many varying factors.

Quite a few failiures on nasioc of eagles, but at the end of the day a bad tune and oil starvation will kill any rod.

ive got eagles in my car. From what ive read the big thing with rods is quality bolts.

do the m ad h ones come with arp's?

with out getting to off topic my research and own experience with eagles is they are good up to 400-450whp reliably.

they are not rated to anything like is quoted on their website - like 900hp and craziness like that.

M&H have arp2000 and eagle are better again so have higher torque ratings than their off the shelf rod bolt replacements. I know bother all about subarus but eagle seem to hold up in evos to highish power. Could just be a better engine though...

Didnt gotasuby snap a rod or some silliness?

M&H rods:

H beam 2 piece

arp2000 rod bolts

Shot peened

High tensile 4340 steel

Hardness of HCR33-38

Heat treated

Silicon bronze bush

Havent tried googling M&H as i cant at work but is it STA's own brand or a international thing?

Scat/m&h are both sta so eay mistake i just didnt have the pm...

Yes my engine builder lied to me so he put scat rods in not Eagles so yes do not run scats at over 30psi.

We will be finding out next week how Eagles hold to 30psi.

imo that seems like a really dumb idea - i think you'll find they want to also escape fairly quickly? what geometry motor are they are part of? and how sort of torque numbers are you expecting?

If that last build was anything to judge by this will be a monster...

only worth purchasing these over 'cheap rods' if they can hold the power... as ive said if you're heading north of 400hp id consider a stronger ibeam rod

What were the argos worth?

I wonder if the ej20 design is harder on rods or something?

argos are in the $1000 range depending who you get em from, and import tax etc.

they are rated to about 800hp.

im sure there are a bunch of things that contribute but the small big end surface area and the over square design dont help the situation, getting worse where you go from a 2.0 -> 2.5. Then you have the boxer shape which makes it inherently hard to keep the oil in the sump under high lateral load.

And the short rod doesn't help. I only use I beams in motors now I build. And don't trust engine builders anymore. I'll get it machined and assemble myself.

The build quality aspect has already been brought up.

Thats something I would be wary about given the builder of this particular engine is known to take short cuts.

wish i went i beam ,it can be done later .

at 25psi im not expecting it to do more then 20,000 hard kms before a tare down/something go "bad" anyway. @30 im going to be scared it'll implode
