Fuel Smell through Air Con

Hi guys my E-tune 2001 Legacy has had a bit of a fuel smell through the air con in the cold mornings or just on startup when the engine is cold for a while now - and I have done a bit of searching and found that the problem seems to be with the fuel hoses under the Manifold?

I have also noticed that the fuel consumtion seems to be not very good for an E-tune - Im only getting about 380kms or less on a tank

Can people confirm that I will have to take the manifold off and how long a job this is?

I thought this was normal on start up as the car runs rich until warm. Mine does this so would like to know if it is not normal.

Could be fuel hoses gone hard over time and the clamps need tightening, or a leaky o-ring.

Mates E-tune needed all the hose clamps in the engine bay tightened and that stopped the smell for a while. Really needs the rubber sections replaced when it gets to that point IMO.

That\'s about the same fuel consumption as my BG5 tt. Going to replace the air filter and plugs to see if it makes a difference.

Idk about e tunes but most factory subarus have hard lines under manifold. Not rubber. So the only rubber lines you have are the 3 by the passenger strut tower. Unless you have done split fuel rail with rubber hoses under the manifold.

theres short rubber joiners

I smell fuel mainly because I back out of my drive and assume its the rich startup coming in vents/window etc

top right etc (accessible without removing)

woah soooo many kms to a tank !! around 380km seems pretty good ... back when my BE5 was twin it wasnt that good .. mind you it all comes down to how you drive ..

Have just had an explanation from Nelson Subaru about my fuel leak - there is a leak under the manifold off one of the rubber hoses - when they checked it out they found that fuel had been puddling on top of the engine - whenever I went to start the car - hence the shit fuel economy!

Interesting - but will cost me $600ish for them to fix it for me!!

Check google for this matter as there is alot of chatter about the subject. Something about a previous recall regarding this matter i think?

Ethonol blended fuels perhaps? (Gull E10 etc)

Yes I have checked this out and there is no recall or warranty for this problem in NZ

no gull in nelson, actually I haven\'t seen a gull down south before tbh.

Hey man, just go to a wreckers get a new manifold with fuel rails etc. on it. way cheaper!

yeah possibly, but with my job that I do, I dont have the time to do this job - it isn\'t an easy job and is quite time consuming

Isn\'t it just the rubber hoses that connect the lh and rh fuel rails?

yes and you have to take the manifold off to get to them

Thanks guys - but Subaru Is already half way through it now - the good thing now is that they said I took them shorter than they expected so It will be less than $600 now

All good fella I just want a good outcome for ya, me personally - I loath paying any garage any sum of money, because I\'ve been ripped before but that\'s my prerogative, not yours.

Yea thanks mate I have given Nelson Bays Motor Group a rev up about not doing extra things on my car or anyones car without confirming it first - because It has been known to happen before!

I find If you speak to the guys in the workshop there - preferably Nathan you will get on well and he knows a lot about the TT legacys too

380k? f**k me thats bad... i just pulled a 620km off a tank going palmy - auckland labour weekend, and i was giving it a bit of schtick through the twisties.... glad you found the leak.

I have my E-tune back from subaru now - is going great - they replaced the leaky fuel hoses - had to get these from Subaru in Japan! - and I also put another ECU in the car as well the ECU was out of a 2002 B4 - and it seems to have fixed the det! and the cars doing 14.7 psi
