WRX RA vs WRX STi RA - Engine Only!

Hi folks,

FYI I have just spent the last hour doing various google combinations but can\'t find a consistant answer:

Does anyone know whether there is any difference internally between a 96 wrx ra and sti ra engine? I\'ve been offered a bare block wrx ra engine with stuffed bearings for $100 and thought it would be ok to build up on the side for when my RS engine blows (it will happen).

I wont bother though if it\'s just another closed deck block with nothing special to it, but if it has good heads and internals as opposed to same old then maybe it\'ll be worth it.....

think the sti\'s are factory forged and the wrx\'s probably have better flowing heads than the old rs motors

The only, and I mean absolutely only STI motor that is factory forged is the V7 EJ207. The rest are hypereutetic or whatever the word is.

On those year ones, I\'m not overly familiar, something to do with the heads being shim over vs shim under or something along those lines?

Most, if not all, pre V7 STi shortblocks have factory forged pistons.

wrx ra is a standard wrx block aka cast

now if its a wrx st ra (v3) then it will be having a better block and forged pistons EK20K

but if its v2 then its cast as well same as its wrx brother

basically a ej20G

soooo.. in summary it wud be likely its abt the same as what u have already

and +1 on the ej207 from v7 being the better of the whole lot..
