Automatic Usage

Just recently upgraded my 96 Legacy GT to a 03 3.0R

Its my first automatic car and was wondering what the best thing to do while driving around, if I\'m at the lights do I put in neutral or just leave it in drive?

yes put it in neutral at the lights just like a manual. I put my foot on the break whilst changing into gear from a stop start in my auto makes change smoother

Never ever heard of anyone putting an auto into neutral at the lights. Doesn\'t that defeat the fucking purpose of having an auto?

I think most people who do it do so cos the car tends to vibrate less in neutral while idling.

If it vibrates excessively whilst in Drive get the transmission serviced.

I put ours into neutral, car cant move when not in drive. Had it happen when the vacuum hose to the booster failed, car moved forward and hit car in front, no damage but ever since that day have never trusted autos at lights.

It\'s a valid question. I remember way back when, my driving instructor said best to put in neutral at the lights, as a safety measure more than anything in case foot slipped off brake plus in theory it uses less gas (like, a tiny, tiny bit less)

No different to sitting in gear with your foot on clutch I suppose. It stuck with me, I always put it in neutral at the lights.

I was mainly asking around the wear and tear on the car and petrol usage, my googling lead me to believe that its split pretty evenly between people thinking D is better than N and vice versa.

I couldn\'t find any proof behind either position though

Transmission in Sport mode

Hard on gas

Revs build up to 3000 rpm

Release brake

Whooosh !

Otherwise, put in D, hold on brakes until you reach torque converter stall point (where torque converter is most efficient at multiplying torque), release brakes, zooooom.

Mike\'s not too good with written or spoken language... so I will explain. I believe he was expressing some mystification at your statement about changing from N to D while completely stationary being smoother with your foot on the brake.
