Caliper mount bolt snapped off in brembo - what do

Recommended Posts

So we were changing rotors on lagbort\'s v7 STi and one of the caliper mounting bolts snapped in half in the caliper. This is according to my googling somewhat common due to steel + aluminum = weld themselves together (and I presume garage monkeys over tightening with rattle guns).

Friend took it to an engineering buddy who managed to drill out the center to approx 50% hole size, but was unable to remove.

Solution seems to be to machine it out and then get a \'helicoil\' put in?

Where would one take this in Wellington to have done. Macbilt?

If the centre hole is right you should be bale to drill out most of the stud and retap the hole to get the rest out.

failing that what size is the bolt ( I have a selection of helicoils here) becuase if it is like m10 x 1.25 ( metric fine) good luck with finding some one with the kit in stock, I had to buy a kit myself as no one had a kit in stock for that size, pretty much goes for any of the FINE metric sizes, very unusual outside of the motortrade

I believe it is M10x1.5 according to google. 17mm rear brembo caliper bolt. I don\'t have a drill press or similar so I can\'t drill it out myself (and thus probably also can\'t install a helicoil?). Based on google these require helicoiling almost 100% of the time because they fuck the thread so badly.

would a soaking it in a penetrant then using an easy out + heat not work

Penetrant didn\'t help and I\'m hesitant at using heat on an aluminium caliper (yes they\'re subjected to heat but not exactly the same). I don\'t have any easy outs but I don\'t think it would be able to get it out as those bolts are 80ft-lbs+ and I\'m a little girl

Cant wind it out with a pick? silly suggestion but Ive spent a while trying to get broken bolts out before that end up winding out with a pick. Guessing its hellastuck which is why you need it fixed. Any engineering shop should be able to do it I wouldve thought just need a drill and pick/tap as above. Freeze off?

This.

You might have to retap to a different thread and go get some high grade Cap bolts. Wouldnt trust helicoils on something major like this

I had to do pretty much the same thing on the Spec C when I got the Brembos put on. One of the threads was buggered so had a helicoil put in. it was sweet after that. I took it to a place in Naenae. The name escapes me atm, but I\'ll see if I can find the address and Google it

EDIT: From looking at google maps / streetview, looks like it was Howat Industries. Try them.

I think the problem is they didn\'t use anti seize lube when they put the calipers back on.. The bolts really should have been thrown away and replaced with new ones.. part number for the rears is 901120102 and 901120103 for the fronts.. might be a good idea to replace all of the bolts and a good coat of anti sieze once you sort the problem out with the stuck one.. try as we are borg said above but if its something that you can\'t do yourself then don\'t do it. take it to a engineering shop

lol - not actually that common, might be the pretend monkeys undoing stuff the wrong way ?

theres many threads on nasioc / iwsti of this occurring, as supposedly there\'s a typo in the service manual where they\'re supposed to be torqued to 80ftlbs but it says 114, which is almost the max strength of the bolt.

He took it to his mechanic to do the fronts and another bolt did the same thing.

In saying that, the one we took off my car was fine

If you cant find anyone to do it, send it to me And I will do it :)

I\'ve hopefully found somewhere to do it but thanks.

And yeah I\'ll be replacing the bolts with new

I doubt that the maximum strength of a caliper bolt would be so low 114 ft/lb is not very high,

Perhaps not, I can\'t find where I got that info from now :S

Also a clarification on the 80ft-lbs thing for anyone\'s future reference; 80ftlbs is what Brembo specify for the front calipers. The rears as per Subaru are 47.9ftlbs which sounds about right. (M12-1.5 vs M10-1.5)

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
