Replacing a tyre/s?? Worries over centre diff etc

Replace one tyre, when/if it happens replace the center diff and housing with phase 1 parts from an old stuffed gearbox.

Very cost effective..... If you have the tools, knowledge and time to do it yourself.

Otherwise maybe not so much.....

For what it's worth, the placard on my Outback recommends a much higher pressure in the rear than in the front if carrying heavy loads, and that has 60 profile tyres.

Pretty sure last time we had this discussion it was decided the variance required to bork a diff was a lot more than one worn tyre of same spec.

Lets say that the diff will survive. The next question is. How is the handling and driving experience affected by having a centre diff that is always partially engaged (assuming a pair was replaced) or if you are replacing only one would you do it at the front or rear. Personally, if I had to do only one I'd put it at the back. I imagine hitting standing water with different tread depths on the front could be interesting.

If you're concerned about having a partially engaged centre diff then chucking a single new one at the back will give you partially engaged centre and rear viscous diffs.

Dunno about everyone else but most standing water i hit is typically a partially flooded lane on the motorway so the water depth on one side is always deeper than the other, so you'll get alot more of a pull to one side from that than different tread depths.

I think its well established that centre diffs dont blow from slightly uneven tread wear on same profile tyres. Heck hate to think how hard it is on a car when you turn a long sweeping corner.

I drove my car with a blown centre for over a year no damage to anything else just ****ty handling.

How would uneven diff/tyres cause it to blow locked?

not sure how you got it to blow and it be unlocked

What happens with the Viscous Couplings is that the Fluid in them overheats and goes solid, which effectively locks the diff, this can cause issues over time

My 10c would be that you can run the same tire size front and rear of different brands provided the O/D of both brands is within 1-2%.
