Can I use a later 90's 5 spd GC8 STi geabox in a 2000 v7 GDA?

As long as the final drive ratio match up you can, it will bolt up fine, bell housings are the same.

The difficulty comes from different ratio and size diffs, if it's 5 speed swap with 5 speed it's pretty straightforward.

Get gearbox code and look at this page which tells you final drive ratio. http://www.gearhack.com/myink/ViewPage.php?file=docs/Subaru+Transmission+Chart

I dont know why youd want to, the later models 5 speed box is a lot stronger than the earlys, not as strong as 6 speed, but definately stronger.

So would you say that the TY754VBBAA is stronger than the TY754VBAAA even though the TY754VBAAA was used on the late 90s stis and the TY754VBBAA is used on the v7 non sti?

How much power can I put through these boxes safely?

Ok cool :)

Just to double check. The one I've got now is crunchy, especially in 5th (bought it this way)... there wouldn't be anything else I could do for this other than a recondition or new box is there?

What did you end up doing? I have the exact same issue. I blew my V7 Gearbox and trying to find one the same is proving difficult. I have found a TY754VBAAA but unsure whether it would work due to the Speed Sensor located on the gearbox being cable or electronic.

As per other thread just swap sensor over.

So i did it! Works really well! Gear stick is a little sloppy towards the left so must just be a bush or spring i may need to replace. Thanks so much for the advice/knowledge!

Yep p1 boxes require an external spring to return the lever from the left.

Its not power that kills them. Ive had 3 boxes give issues at low 200wkw and none went under pressure. Always launch with wheel spin dont bog and she'll be right.

Classic! should be Quote of the year;)

Fwiw you can use the early Centre diff housing etc from a box that has cut outs for reverse gear lock out thingy think it's 96 onwards the earlier 5 spds don't have the cut out in the inside of the housing for it so you will never get the housing on
