03 Legacy AWD 5 Speed Replacement

Recommended Posts

Sheeeesh, been a while.

Friend may have a deal for me on his 03 Legacy Wagon, 2.0 non turbo AWD 5 speed.

Front diff has apparently gone bad, still drivable - but once it gets warm it starts making all sorts of noises when cornering.

Does anyone know a). What the part number on these gearboxes are?
b). Any recommendations in Dunedin who to fit it for me

c). Reputable wreckers that may be able to source a replacement

and d). How much this could end up costing me (get a dang quote, i know).

Front diff has gone bad, but only when warm? Sounds weird to me. Could just be some worn bearings somewhere. You should get it properly diagnosed before trying to find a new box.

A replacement box though should only be $300 to $500. Labour will be easily $1000 these days. You'll probably want to change the clutch and replace or machine the flywheel. Several hundred more dollars there.

But if it's just a worn CV or wheel bearing, it'll be much cheaper!

Dunno if the NA ones are any different but GT’s and 3.0r’s usually wear out centre viscous diffs rather than fronts since the fronts are open. The usual best way to feel it is tight turns in car parks once warm.

What kind of noises is this one making?

My friends had it diagnosed a year back as front diff going but you never know what some mechanics these days could be trying.. When I get my hands on it i'll take it for a drive and get some vids.
