Crack testing blocks

Shale

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.

I'm about to pilfer me a new dirty ol' BC5, and it needs work. Ie...it overheats.

My plan is to reuse my old 20G closed deck block with the heads, get the lot planed, put in my new metal headgaskets, cambelt kit, oil filter and waterpump...and go from there.

Only issue is I need the old block crack tested.

Where can/should I go for this?

Cheers.

On the same subject of crack testing whats the average price we would pay to get a head crack tested?

do they use the Dye method or/ and block the chambers off and put it into a water tank and pump compress air into it to see any leakages? if so has anyone built their own crack tester unit?

I didnt see them do it but the last set of heads i got pressure tested cost $70 from memory

if you cant actually see any cracks it's probably a waste of time. Lapping the valve seats isn't however.

If that guy is married, he is in the running for obtaining the Best Wife Ever award. Otherwise meh, we'd all do the same in a bachelor pad haha

The only times I've ever seen a cracked block, there's usually a conrod poking through too. I wouldn't bother.

Taylor Automotive and Wade Engineering are the places we use.

As long as she's also only 3 1/2 foot tall and has a flat spot on top of her head for resting a beer can, she's still right up there ;D

I'll do it for free if you want, we specialise in crack testing etc, see my other thread : http://www.clubsub.org.nz/forum/index.php/topic,1483.0.html

I'm not cool enough to view the other thread (think paid members only? Yeah I am an utter cheaparse ;D)...

If you could give it a squiz it would be absolutely awesome. The block was a b!tch when it was part of a complete unit - overheating very quickly, pressurising the coolant system and making radiators very sadpanda. Yet when we took it down to the shortblock the headgaskets weren't exactly showing signs of being blown. We'd assumed it was a warped block from severe overheating - the previous owner sold it as seized.

On that note, other ryan (boostin) - I was planning to take the heads and above block to Wade Auto on Baz's recommendation for planing - would be handy if they could check it for epic fail should Ryan #1 be unable to do anything for it.

Sadly I couldn't turn the car on to at least hear what state it's in - no ignition, and trying to wire it resulted in blowing a fuse or two when it tried to turn over. D'OH.

Thanks for the feedback and help guys - hope it'll start to fall in place.

Now let the silliness resume :D

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
