And is that a legit pic of Subaru "FT-86"? I read that Subaru were unveiling their version at the Detroit Motor Show this month but I can't find any details anywhere.

Probably, car is based on shortened Legacy platform.

What pisses me off is that the aesthetic advantage of a low bonnet line with a horizontally opposed engine (as displayed to great effect on the original Toyota concept) is negated by stupid EU pedestrian safety regulations that dictate stupidly high bonnet lines.

I agree whole heartedly. I think the regulations are just a tad over the top. Bring out a JDM version that has a lower bonnet line and make the EU version artificially high
