Cert for turbo substitution???

Ok so I was flicking through the VIRM tonight after coming across some various murmurings throughout the internet...

"LVV certification is always required for the fitting of a supercharger or turbocharger as a modification, or the substitution of a turbo or waste-gate, or the re-chipping of electronic engine control units on turbo cars"

Well, I'll be.

How many people, especially with Subies and their enormous variety of turbos, are running a turbo that's not original??!

So my question...

Has ANYONE EVER been pulled up on it? Heck there's so many of them that I dare say your average mechanic/cop isn't going to have a gander under your bonnet and say HEY THAT'S A VF24 THESE CAME OUT WITH VF28's!!!

Has anyone even bothered to get it mentioned on their cert?

And is it like... really even a requirement, if you go from 1 turbo to another that's damn near identical? I mean sure, if you're going from a TD04L to a twisted GT3540 then maybe someone should be double-checking your work but what about drop-in replacements?

Yeah I wouldnt be worrying about the changing of your turbo.. I doubt it will be picked up on a WOF

My cert guy added "engine modification" to mine. its a very general catagory in which the turbo is covered.

As long as I stick with the listed engine size (2.0) I can do anything to the engine I like

what happens when they run out of room on the cert plate? I assume another plate OR the above 'general terms'

I guess you end up like some of those show cars that have been around for a while with 4 or so cert plates all over the engine bay... screw that.

you dont have to have them in the engine bay, mine is in the base of the B pillar. and lots of cert stuff goes on the paper copy not the cert plate itself.

yea its kind of funny really, rolling in for a warrant in the BG5.. all yellow under the bonnet, heat wrapped zaust, STI intercooler, nice VF22 etc.

And simply you say to them, "yea man, stock boost, stock Subaru ECU, same HP as a stock TT" and they just slap a warrant on it LOL

I got rejected for a wof on my old single turbo GTB due to it being converted from twin. Ended up getting a letter from a tech at subaru, that basically stated the power outputs of the GTB, and the STI the engine was from (ignoring the fact it was running higher boost from factory and the internals were aftermarket) were the same.

Normaly having a letter wouldnt mean shit as a modification is a modification regardless of weather it makes the same power.
