Fair price to pay to get headers fitted.

Hi guys, just wondering what a fair price to pay is to get factory headers fitted onto my v7 sti as I don't like the sound of the equal length headers. Will I be needing new gaskets or not? So far have been to Magoo mufflers and been quoted around $275-$300 and I supply gaskets. Also if anyone has a business they can recommend in Christchurch for the job. Thanks

me ill change them for you if you supply gaskets its only 3 gaskets you need prob about $20

That would be awesome. What's the best place for gaskets? Genuine Subaru ones or just repco?

exhaust gaskets arnt a major but still go genuine if you can. $300 seams a bit steep if its just a strait swap .

do you still run the standard up pipe?

Don't believe so but to be honest haven't had a proper look, I do have the factory up pipe with the factory headers which I bought as the car came with the equal length xforce system like http://www.xforce.com.au/img/products/p3_01.jpg

cool id say thats where the $$ came into it . because to change the up pipe involves basically removing the turbo because the bolts are a mongrel to get to.

would mean taking the downpipe off also.

hmmmm nothings ever easy, have a mate who has a hoist and what not and has done a bit of work on Subaru's, its just finding the time to do these things that's the problem as one of us is either working or he is away rallying. Thanks for the info though.

Don't like the after market equal length, I love the Subaru rumble and having been chasing after it for the past 2 cars (last car was a non turbo b4 so didn't rumble)

Get a Quote from them, and also from Crowesport and Stubaru. Someone may have them cheaper while still being genuine Subaru ones

the genuine exhaust gaskets are steel . they are perfectly fine to re use as long as they aren't damaged

new gaskets is the go tho .otherwise your asking for a leak+existing gaskets may not be reusable.

for the sake of pennys replace.

genuine head gaskets can also be steel would you reuse them?

completely different story with a head gasket . . you of all people should know that ? my exhaust manifold has come off about 10 times . still original gaskets . just use high temp silicone each time . . there's 40 Psi pressure inside my exhaust manifold and no leaks . . . . just stating that you can re use them fine . .

thats why they dont leak you could throw the gasket away and use sealant and achieve the same thing.

they wouldn't leak without it at low boost . . . but if you know me i love silicone :-) can never not seal something too much ! even brand new gaskets i seal . . .

I've re-used both of my turbo gaskets, up-pipe gasket and exhaust manifold gaskets and I have no leak issues.

Doing the headers... if standard ones will bolt up to whatever up-pipe is in there then it's a quick and relatively easy job, hardest part will probably be getting the O2 sensor out without breaking it...

If you need to do the up-pipe as well then it's a pretty big job, as mentioned you have to pull the downpipe, turbo, then the up-pipe. So probably a couple of hours and a lot more mess since you would be removing coolant and oil lines from the turbo.

you can remove up pipe and leave turbo on just so you know . undo engine mount nuts and jack motor up gives heaps of room. remove headers first then remove up pipe

I miggght be imagining things but isn't the downpipe in the way of the bolts on the up-pipe?

If you remove the downpipe and the up-pipe... doesn't the turbo come away as well?

yeah . take down pipe off. leave turbo on brackets with oil lines and water lines still on no leaks and no need to bleed coolant

Sealer on exh gasket pre turbo is asking for turbo failure

lol . just like silicone on rocker cover gaskets ? it is possible to get enough on to seal up but not enough to squeeze all into the exhaust ! and you can leave turbo on and change up pipe . . . depends if you want to take it off and use more time bleeding coolant etc
