Over priced?

Right so long story short, decided to get my 5th gear syncro replaced cause it was for lack of a better word, "borked".

I thought aah sweet, while im not needing to drive for a while il get it replaced with my warrenty...or so i thought.

Gearbox was taken out by Wingers and sent off to an "independant gearbox specialist".

Im then told by the warranty company "driverite/autosure" that no, this will not be covered as (although it was only 5th) its normal "wear and tear".

I now have to pay for the gearbox to have been inspected. For the gearbox to be put back in and while at it I it was advised to look at replacing the clutch (107k on the clock).

Now that you know the story, whats your views on the pricing,

$2950+gst for the inspection and syncros.

$645+gst for wingers to put the box back in.

$850+gst for a new clutch and bits for thhe clutch.

Anyone have any experience on this and know weather for instance I can get my car towed to another shop and get the box sent there if its cost effective? PS Auckland, otherwise id be in to see ichi ban :D

I would hope they are slightly over pricing, but with today's increases I would say its not far off

had my auto box refurb'ed over 5 years ago and that was $2.5k (installed) =$1k increase over 5 years going by your quotes

(not from Wingers FYI)

Jeebus I was nowhere near that for getting the 5th synchro replaced and other associated work(Albeit I went thru my local mechanic Tony at RDL perforamance and he helps me out alot). I definitely think it is on the steep side of things.

ive had syncros done on 2 seperate occasions, first time i got speed-tech in hamilton to do it, they charged me $800 and that included stripping gearbox and 3 new syncros but not pulling gearbox out as that was covered by warranty as they were doin clutch at same time, this warranty was also with autosure who refused to replace the syncros unless they failed altogether.

the 2nd time i did all labour myself and had the replace 2 syncros, 1st-2nd gear selector hub, main input shaft and 2nd gear cog, came to a total of $960 just for the parts and that was with some trade discount at wingers. so yea parts arent cheap but they will be killing you on the labour as most places do.

Stubaru in Christchurch just replaced 3rd and 4th gear in my gearbox ( got the box back on Thursday). I would imagine the labor would be about the same as both shafts needed to be stripped and assembled. All up it cost $1120 including GST the parts were $729 including GST. I took the gearbox out of the car and put it back in.

So going by those numbers it should cost about $400 for labor to strip a gearbox and replace parts in it.

Hope this helps.

yeah in this case labour and parts arnt my gripe (well it really is ) its that fking inspection thats killing me.

yea thats very extreme just to strip/inspect a gearbox and gears, ask them to break the pricing down for you, ask how many hours labour are on there?

UPDATE:

I spoke to that company doing the inspection and rebuild I had been misinformed as the work had not been done at this stage.

Turns out (i forget everything that was said) but i need to have all syncros replaces, as well as the teeth on the dog box are worn down and bent over beyond repair. Im waiting for the official quote for the replacement parts. Apparently the bits i need replacing are not sold separately so i need to buy an like set of parts.

Some info/advice from ichiban would be greatly appreciated D:

Does anyone have any contacts who may be able to get gearbox bits cheap?

Ok first thing is to let everyone here know that we are talking 6spd NOT 5spd

My advice to you is to call the warranty company direct.

If things in the "dog box" (which i assume you mean transfer case) are broken,

then this IS a claim...Simple.

Now, Wingers should have requested your approval to strip and report after contacting warranty company

and advised you that if nothing is broken then there is NO claim. This is standard proceedure.

Wingers should have the tools or be able to get them from SNZ to do this job

(many vehicles still in warranty (NZ new cars) that they need to be able to fix!!)

6spd's do take some time to set up, and I have only ever built two of them on a Factory training course !

I really need to see the quote, to be able to comment about the repair pricing

But Wingers price to refit is OUT THERE, I mean WAY OUT THERE !!!

I paid just short of 800 all up to have my 5th and reverse synchro sorted. that was done by richard at PS automotive in Pukekohe

5 or 6 spd?

the issue with the earlier ver7 and ver 8 6 speeds is that when the synchro's need replacing, they superceed to a newer part number. Fuji Heavy Industries (ie Subaru) says the newer part number needs to be used with the newer gear kit so states most of the gear kit is to be replaced at the same time.

the older parts numbers are no longer avail (as you get with superceeded parts)

you may find part of the large cost is this gear kit

What Ichi said. Call the warranty company direct and depending on the kms that the syncros shouldnt give up at *** (your kms here) ESPECIALLY 5th!

I could imagine 1st or 2nd but 5th? you must be rev matching and changing without a clutch a :)

I remember mine was covered by warranty but was classed as exotic and was drivesure. I wouldnt be paying full cost for the removal and id get them to leave the gearbox out.

Mind you only takes and hour or so to get them out anyway by yourself.

mad would be intereste on hearing a fuller story here cause of the rediculasness going on here. still waiting for that FKN report. if i needed my car id be getting really upset by now.

mine was warranty done by Janssens; I made claim on the GTB 2 week after I brought it. Claim was for the gearbox and & turbo. I did ask for Subs Ar Us to do the job, as they had a good Subaru mechanic there. After the first assessment Janssens said turbos fine gearbox is not.. Janssens sent it to the gearbox shop.. for the syncro .. there was no mods, but Janssen looked for every excuse not to cover the job.. in the end they got the Gearbox shop to do syncros, yet only if I paid for the replacement clutch fluids etc.. done.. my bill $900 bucks. he told me one week to do the syncros leave the car there.. ok. 1 week and 2 days later he rang me at 4.30 on Saturday and said ok come get the car.. my cousin and I arrived, I paid the $900 cash..

Went to inspect the car, open the bonnet, there was oil everywhere all over the engine.. the man told me there had trouble with the turbos, I ask why there touch the turbos if the job was the gearbox.. said they remove them to get box out.. HUH what.. remove turbo to get the box out..

this point, I was told to leave.. ok started the car, all seemed ok.. got to 45km and my GTB would violently jerk, like missing.. my cousin followed me, smoke was pouring out of the engine (turbo vent) I took the vehicle to mates just 400 meters down the road and left it.. Saturday

Monday following week, rang Janssens told them, was told to wait, they will send an assessor out to check it.. according to the law the gearbox shop must be allow to fix it.... HUH what.. they failed; why send it back? I had to.. during this time.. for about 8 months my GTB travelled around Auckland to different mechanics to sort the turbo problem, AFM, gearbox, vacuum problem etc etc.. and FAILED.. in the end Janssens wash there hand of it and said to me, if I think I have a case take them to court.. aarrr ok, I did.

Inspection done by Subs ar us.. showed dodgy work by the gearbox shop.. I produced for the courts, an invoice for an exedy clutch kit.. yet on removal of the gearbox.. photographed by the mechanic, and shown to the courts, I had two different parts to make up a clutch kit.. valeo clutch plate and exedy press plate (my old one, not a new one).. the spring was removed from behind pedal to make it feel HD.. turbo bracket & bolts were missing AFM was damaged, error code 23 was stored in the factory ecu and the list goes on... .. It was a pr**k of a time..

They lost in the end.. court found in my favour.. yet it was some 2 month before I got payment.. but only because I filed again at the court house..

Maybe a good thing for you to do now.. But when things started to turn ugly I started to copy everything.. recorded conversations, copied document from warranty company and kept a journal, I felt I had to.. it helped me in the end..

sounds dodgy... The syncros should be covered under warranty.. warranty company would use every excuse to get out of paying for it.. accuse you of racing or mods etc etc

After reading your warranty policy your covered for the syncros .. it states it on pages 1 & 2. So give them death.

tried calling motorplus to discuss that it says its broken. but hitting a brick wall. saying that because the syncros have been worn and are now failing any subsequent damage will not be covered.

not sure where to go from here.

Say to them that you will pay for the worn 5th gear syncro but they must pay for the damaged and failed parts

Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.
