Non interference or interference

Recommended Posts

Hi there no it hasn't let go, I'm pretty sure it's skipped a few or a tooth, it was making a very loud belt sort of noise when I started as I was going to take it to work. I wasn't driving it like that so turned off and drove my other car, tried to start next day and it just turns over, and backfires out of exhaust, I've been told by 3 mechanics it sounds like cambelt has slipped, it has fuel, spark and the starter has just been reconditioned aswell.

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_EJ_engine

The SOHC EJ Subaru boxer engines were non-interference engines through 1996, run by a single timing belt driving both cams (both sides of the engine) and the water pump. Because they are non-interference engines, if the timing belt fails, the engine of the models up to 1996 will not be destroyed. The oil pump is driven directly from the crank shaft and the waterpump by the timing belt. All DOHC and 1997-up SOHC EJ engines are interference engines, if the timing belt fails the engine will likely be destroyed or the valves & piston will be heavily damaged.

I have a 2000 BH EJ251 SOHC, Timing belt went at 100km, nothing bent, Although i just replaced a 1995 ej20 N/A which is technically a non interference motor and it had bent valves, 1991 RS broken belt, no damage, 2002 EJ25 with AVCS smashed in the front and broke belt, put a new belt on and it ran.

If you are not sure but have some basic mechanical skills go to pick a part (if you have a local one) $6 will get you a used timing belt, throw it on and see if it\'s ok. That way you don\'t need to spend extra on new bits if the motor is damaged.

This one still ran...somehow
