Vf29 vs TD05

Ive owned a Legacy for 2 and a half years now(twin turbo) and im making a move to a WRX v3 non sti it currently has a TD04 in it.

I have a Vf29 lying around at my workshop v5-v6 STi and a TD05 from a mates old car(good condish) which one would be the better upgrade ?

new to the single turbo seen 8)

Vf29 will probably spool better but run out of puff after 5.5k rpm

talking from experience as I had a vf28 (pretty much same turbo) on my wrx

v3, a vf22 or 23 from what i have been hearing is a damn good upgrade.....

if you've already got a vf29 you can just put a P20 exhaust housing on it and its a newer version of a vf23

Vf29 will be a strait fit just use the correct banjo bolt

The td05 - does it have strait inlet cos the Subaru ones had a 90degree bend at the mouth....

Take the compressor housing off and grind the 90 degree inlet off the td05 and get a straight one alloy welded on and use the td05 they're a very solid good turbo - will lag slightly more than the vf but the top end is far greater

I wud Say the vf29 be more better suited as a td04 replacement as the cams and ecu tune be more geared to a faster spoiling turbo and no that much of a top end

Hmmm if u really can then try both and report back as a experiment on what was better in real world differences

The only way the td05 would be better if the cars going to be pushed to the limit with exhaust, intake, front mount, fuel ecu and tune. Otherwise use the vf29 for better low and mid range.

^^^ exactly - it depends if you want low down or top end - td05 is great no matter what - goes nice on Ver 2s which they come on

vf29 be suited better for a non sti, the sti was what got the tdo5? which has abit more hp to help spool it etc

go td05 i got one on my wagon . they go really good and the lag is fuck all

its more to do with the tune on the ecu

the tune is optimised for a quicker spool so between the 2 getting the quicker spooling one makes more sense

end of the day the tune is not best for either but the vf29 is a closer match

when i upgraded from a vf30 to a vf22, the lag was not that bad at all as there is not too much beween the 2 but a bit of a tune in the lower rpm ranges made the vf22 feel as good as the vf30 (to a point)

i got a vf37 twin scroll setup in my car, the response is very good its probably because of the fact that its formulated with the AVCS?

cam timing can very much so effect response but the turbo controls the outcome

v2 non sti comes with td05h

any of the subaru turbos arent laggy - some people say they are but theyre comparing them to tiny turbos -

bc5 come with tiny vf8 or 10 or whichever it is - they go fine with a td05 on stock tune

looks like Vf29 is the way to go..im not looking to be the fastest rex around I just don't wanna be the slowest lol.

I had some basic mods in mind( car already has e.w.g, 3inch turbo back,aftermarket ecu)

but yeah ill try both, the tdo4 feels good down low, just after that bit more.

haha it came with the external but i got a set of semi tuned headers in mind when i install the vf29 this weekend(boss lets me use the hoist lol) im ditching the external for sure

if you want a little more from a tdo4 go the tdo5 ???

its the swap i did and there was no omg change but it gave alot more up top. if you have a tdo5 why not go for that then you wont have to change again later
