How does one Identify a forged piston WITHOUT a full disassembly

Hi all,

well it is time for the RX to get another engine in it ( time to fix leaks and cambelt).

I have another engine here which came out of a rally car that is supposedly "forged" if i was to remove heads to replace head gaskets ( as a preventive measure) is there any sure signs that the pistons are forged ?

I drove the car it was in before stripping it and it went like a cut cat running factory everything with a boost tap

Pull the gudgeon pin covers off and look in the hole. just spin the crank until you can see the side of the piston. if you know your pistons you should be able to tell

forged pistons dont make a car go faster...

If anything it makes them slower (lower compression) - if u pull the heads the Sti pistons are flat top - wrx pistons are dome top and have big recess for valves

They'll still be flat top - the wrx pistons are very very noticeable

and anyway i wouldnt call sti pistons 'flat top', it might just be terminology but mine are recessed.

did they make sti style forged pistons for the RX engine?...if you know what i mean

just guessed it was a wrx engine but aftermarket forged pistons are normally shiny and have a smooth finish (no casting marks)

Afaik it it an RX engine rebuilt with forged pistoffs..

If it's the one he showed me last time i was there..

Yes it is an EA82 T which was fully rebuilt a few years ago,

Just becuase its not a WRX/STi does not mean it does not have the ability to go fast, even with me behind the wheel

maybe i just throw head gaskets/waterpump/belts and plugs on it and see how it goes.

then rebuild mine with some goodies as a spare
