Securing Brake Hoses

Hey guys,

I just installed coilovers and one of the criteria for cert is "brake hoses must be secured" and my coilovers didnt come with brake hose holders.

So i was wondering how you guys have done this? ( if you have )

In cable ties we trust

+1 on cable ties... For my fronts i chiseled the mounts off my old struts (they were rooted beforehand), drilled them out to accept a bolt though them, then bolted them up to the existing mounts (v7 sti struts)

Rears are clamped in the holders with a cable tie as added security.

Yea they are cable tied at the moment, but i dont think they will pass cert as they could snap and send brake hose onto something sharp etc.

whats the legal requirement and wording around mounting? My own understanding was that you had to have a solid mounting point. Like what fozzie did, and what I've done.

Thats assumed though not having read the legal requirements.

For things like brakes, and having them fail - its bothering scary and i wouldn't scimp under the 'she'll be right' mantra. Do it right the first time imo.

Just says reason for rejection:

17. A flexible hydraulic brake hose (including connections):

a) is leaking brake fluid, or

b) is insecure, or

c) bulges under pressure, or

d) is twisted, stretched or chafed, or

e) has external sheathing which is cracked to the extent that the reinforcing cords are exposed, or

f) has metal connections which are excessively corroded, or

g) has an end fitting which is not attached to the hose by means of swaging, machine crimping or a similar process (Note 3).

LVV Cert Threshold guide says that no cert required for aftermarket brake hoses as long as it meets VIRM. It doesn't say anything about brake hoses whatsoever in the suspension category as pertaining to replacing struts, so one could reasonably assume either:

a) Brake hoses should meet VIRM for WOF but otherwise no problem because not mentioned in suspension section of cert threshold; or

b) Brake hoses could be assumed to be aftermarket (even though they're not) because the mounting point has changed / disappeared , in which case they are not required to be certed as long as they meet VIRM

So as long as they're 'secured', in essence.

mine are home made metal strips like that. i use the top clasp bolt to hold them its quite simple really.

^^ Yip Funky i've got some 'D2' strips which bolt to the shock bolt, no pic's of them but you can see in the link added that they are really quite a simple design showen with rubber gromets in where mine retain the metal brake clips & wouldn't take too much to make up from some alloy sheet

So i thought id change my mounting setup before cert this thursday and ill show you my before and after setup

Before with cable ties

After with hose clamps

Definitely looks and feels alot safer than before and hopefully passes cert.

I can confidently say that cable ties do not pass you for a pink sticker nor cert

I failed my WOF on Sat. One of the things in the list were Brake hoes unsecure... So cable ties maybe good but for a WOF they are not! BTW having a bit of hassle find the fricking clips... Manawatu brake and clutch dont even have any... Whats up with that.

Ha i had some hose clamps lying around... Saw some1 elses pick so stole his idea but thanks anyway

Well i can say that my hose clamp method fail cert, so i went to Scarles Performance and brought D2 hose securers that come in the coilover kits.
