'05 Legacy recurring brake shudder

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I purchased my 2005 Legacy 3.0R from Winger last December. After a few months it started getting pretty bad brake shudder. Winger had a look and replaced the front discs as they couldn't be skimmed. This fixed the shudder.

A couple of months later the shudder slowly started coming back. When it got really bad, I took it back to Winger who replaced the front pads and skimmed the discs. The shudder was fixed again.

It's a couple of months later now and the shudder is slowly coming back again.. I don't thrash it at all, most of my driving is on the highway. Is this a common problem with this model? Can anyone think of what could be causing it? Surely brand new genuine pads/discs last longer than a couple of months =/

Any info appreciated.

Cheers

did you bed them in properly. i would go up a hill and use the brakes a lot on way down and see if it fixes it as they can get pad material on disk not uniformally

Yeah one of the mechanics took it for a spin after the installation so I assume he did it properly

only 2 reasons I know of that cause recurring brake shudder

1/ Wheel nuts are over tightened/tightened in wrong sequence

2/ operator issue, riding brakes, sitting with foot on brakes for extended periods

In my travels #2 is the main culprit I see

something has to be misaligned in the hub. I bet its only on one side right? So either you have a caliper that is partially seized or sticky, and you have a bent hub or loose wheel bearing or something.

Lets assume you've had a wheel alignment in the past while, and it comes back fine should rule out any funny play in the hub. Also you should have had a warrant check since December, a WOF should pick up a bothered hub.

Do a caliper seal overhaul and see how that goes imo.

You would think that as he has had pads and disks changed at WINGERS that they would of seen if the caliper slides/seals were buggered also it could be a loose hub nut/wheel bearing but once again it has just been to WINGERS so I gather they would have checked/seen that as well

Thanks for all the advice.

I did one someone said and stomped hard on the brakes a few times. It seems to be a bit better.. Might just get it into a decent mechanic and get them to give the brakes a good look at. Don't really have the time or know-how to do it myself.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
