1st and reverse gear

Sometimes difficult to get into these gears...usually a double pump of the clutch does the trick...

Any ideas??? ???

Legacy BL5...78k on tha clock...doesnt happen all the time...can happen when hot or cold

1st gear always seems to be a pain in the butt

5th could be a syncro

I would try an oil change first to a semi/fully synthetic 75w/90 and see is that helps

Doh! Shit! sorry...not 5th gear...I mean Reverse!!!!...and 1st gear...getting into 5th is as smooth as a babies bottom!! :-)

I test drove a brand new BP Liberty (Legacy) tuned by STI, and 1st and reverse were difficult...

Also my GTB does it as well as did my old grandwagon

when its being stubborn, while stopped select another gear then quickly try 1st or reverse. it should slot in.

selecting another gear like this forces the input shaft to stop rotating. reverse has no syncro and needs the shafts to have stopped rotating.

if this works, bleed the clutch. it may not be disengaging fully.

thats the cheaper fix/problem anyway. best to try it first

as above, mine doenst like reverse at all, i now have a habbit of going 1st to rev, best of luck

yup my 2nd -> 1st shift is near on impossible. reverse aint bad at all tho..

My gtb used to hate 1st as well.

Im quickly thinking clutch may be on the way out...it engages quite high up...its probably due as I dont thinks its been replaced yet since new.

Will change gearbox oil too as recommended...thanks...

How can I be sure its the clutch that is on its way out??? its not slipping or anything...

Should I drop it into a garage...? Highbrook auto is out my way...

1. Change gearbox oil

2. Bleed the clutch..

3. Replace the clutch?

What should I be paying for a new clutch on a BL5 GT??

Reverse gear doesn't have synchros I believe, so naturally it will be harder to get it in reverse, especially if your doing it quickly.

I had a similar issue on one of my other cars... was impossible to select a gear when stationary with out pumping the clutch pedal a few times

Turned out I had a small leak in the hydraulic system for the clutch meaning the pressure exerted in the master cylinder wasnt making it all the way to the slave therefore the clutch wasnt fully disengaging, low fluid level can also have a similar effect

OP - look in yellow pages for some gearbox specialists.

they should be able to check the first two, and will be better at recognising the problem.
