Small light wheels for Impreza?

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about reducing unsprung weight by putting small skinny wheels on my Impreza.

I know it will adversely affect cornering and grip but both of those are more than good enough already for the way I drive ;).

Has anyone tried this?

195/65R15 maintains the factory wheel circumference but is lighter and skinner

Currently have 18s so will be big difference

Experimented with wheels on a previous car and a 195 on a narrower 6"x15" rim (same tyre circumference) got off the line more quickly and yes improved fuel economy too. Can't remember the weight difference but it was a enough to surprise me.

A drop in stone chip road roar would be good too

I couldn't believe the difference when changing from my normal 17's to 16" track tyres and even though they were a much better tyre, the 16" ones had a whole heap more movement when cornering. I wouldn't like to go from 18's to 15's if you ever enjoy going round bends.

If its just straight line performance you're after, it'll probably do something. Whether its a nice change or not will be up to you. Switching to a 205/50 tyre with a lightweight 16" rim would be a better compromise in my opinion.

Stone chip roar will more likely be effected by tread pattern and tyre construction rather than just the size of the tyre itself.

FYI Stock GTB 17"rims (96-98) are 8kg each (alone no rubber)

one of the lightest option OEM Subaru offer (there is a chart on Nasioc - going to find it now - cant find it - Newsuba may be along soon to correct me :D )

Gemini how much does your current wheel/tyre combo weigh?

A cheap option would be to go back to the OEM wheels.

There is a few OEM 16x7 (16.5lbs IIRC) wheels for around $400 on TradeMe if money is tight.

Yeah maybe 18 down to 16 is a better way to go ...

Don't know what the current combo weighs.

If narrower factory 16s are 7.3kg (16.5 pounds) that would be great.

I think the recommended size is 205/55R16 vs 205/50R16 which throws the speedo out by more than 3%

EDIT - NZ new Imprezas came with 195/60R15, 205/50R16, 215/45R17

That said those GTB 17s aren't much heavier ... is the offset correct for an Impreza?

By my calculations a 205/55R16 may weigh slightly less than a 225/45R17 (of same brand & model) although there can't be much in it and impossible to get info on NZ tyre weights!

That would be a great table to sticky. Post limit is 20,000 characters unfortunately =\

16" TE37. DOOO EEET. They look stock-ish (or stock, if you get the STi ones) and you can pick 'em up with your pinky finger.

They are lighter than the wheels that came in my Impreza, which are the 195/65R17 that you're after. IMO the handling gain to stock Subaru size (16") with good, light wheels like the aforementioned Volks is worth it and then some.

Srsly, they even come up as the lightest in that awesome, awesome list posted ;D

Wiretap lurks sometimes - he has a set of TE37s on his BC5 with Adrenalins IIRC. It's a damn good combo.

18s need to GTFO, as not only are they heavier from sheer volume of metal generally speaking, the profile on most Subarus (excluding Foresters and the new behemoths) is too low to offer performance. Sidewall of 40-45 has been proven to be the optimum for handling, as any more is boaty as hell from sidewall flex and any less is screechy from lack thereof. The 50 you get on the 16s is very pliant though, still performs fantastically with the right tyres and won't give you spinal problems during daily driving :P

Unrelated note: I'm trialling a set of RE050s, as I've decided the Adrenalins are way too skid-happy in the wet and chow through like a fat kid with a cake. For some reason I'm finding I'm getting a little better economy (marginal though) on these new directionals, though they have a good solid roar on them over 80km/h. They are such insanely good handlers for just over $200 a corner (on 17s) that IMO it would offset any loss of handling you'd get from going for smaller wheels.

That 40-45 recommendation must relate to a specific width ... presumably 225s on a 17 so 225*.45 = 101.25

Maybe the ideal sidewall height rules change for narrower tyres as they shouldn't flex sideways as much.

Think manufacturers recommended is 205/55R16 (112.75) ...

205/50R16 (102.5) is quite a bit different from manufacturer spec so will have suspension angle and scrub radius implications. Perhaps less offset fixes this?

I've seen both 55s and 50s on 205/16 setups before. IIRC mine are 50s, and US spec is 55 (but I haven't had my caffeine shot this morning so I could be talking drivel).

My two sets of wheels are as close to stock as I could muster - 215/45R17 and 205/50R16. They are what the shops seem to fit as standard for Subaru.

Something I've also noticed is that Bridgestone Potenzas all seem to have obnoxious sidewalls - the GridIII from back in the day especially extended over the lip of most stock and stock replacement wheels, and the Adrenalins don't seem to care for superficial sidewall damage. There's almost no give in the current RE050 sidewalls, though those are 45 profile at about 34psi ;D So I'm sure the actual structure of the tyre makes a difference to the physics as well.

As for narrow tyres, mine on 15s were always squidgy as heck even though they were 195/55R15 on decent inflation. Sure, they were Toyos... :-X

What is your suspension setup, come to think of it? I dunno if I'm comparing apples to oranges, as I have STi Gymkhana struts (stiff as it gets without going adjustable coilover) with well over -1 degree camber at both ends. A setup that's horribly disrespectful to tyre longevity...

Yeah alot of variables in the mix here.

Ideally we'd be comparing the same rim and tyre combo 16" vs 17" on the same car.

Can't see that happening somehow.

Best we might do is:

"What difference did it make going from a 205/55R16 to a 205/50R16 on the same rim?"

I went from 215/45/R17 Toyos on Mak Fioranos to 205/55/R16 Bridgestones on standard five spoke WRX wheels - arm-ometre tells me the 16s are lighter. There have been quite a few people selling those 16s on TradeMe with snow tyres on for between two and four hundred. Cheap wheels with either a free set of gravel/ grass fun tyres, or a nominal rebate from onselling them.

Eh? You meaning non-turbo wheels? You'll need to link an image, as the only 16" wheels on the GDB turbos were the anthracite WRX 5-spokes. http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/5713/n1411506244302052714368.jpg (These are actually grey, not silver...the silver ones are GC8)

The twin 5-spokes that appear on the turbo Imprezas are actually 17", if you are thinking later WRX or STi. http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/3112/n1411506244301083462735.jpg (IIRC, the WRX GDBs scored GTB style wheels. Correct me if wrong, experts)
