Proud New Owner of a Legacy RS Type RA

Have just completed the purchase of a 1990 RS type RA.

My first turbo car and am stoked with it!

Its completely stock apart from the Exhaust which is a 3inch turbo back leading into a 5inch muffler.

Too loud at the moment so am going to put a 3inch muffler on.

While on boost it sometimes surges any ideas why or how to fix this?

What sort of oil should I use and how much for a oil change?

4.5L of oil (although a lot of people put a whole 5L in as a 'just in case' measure). People will have a giant argument between 5w30 and 10w40 but it probably makes no difference to most people's situation

O2 usually cause your car to run rich it wont cause cutting, AFM will sometime make ur car idle really bad. coil packs can cause surging or boost cut as its not getting enough sparks. could be spark plugs also

Hey, just a quick question hijack on the topic, will an incorrect afm throw a cel? Dad and I put the 2l into his bg7 and took nthe 2.2 put in the ecu from the 2l aswell, but only had another afm for an ej18 rather than the ej20 gone into it. The motor was on a manual so it is still using the old inlet(auto throttle body and stuff) and injectors, could they cause this also? Sorry for the hijack lol- car runs fine, needs some moar oil, but otherwise fine, going to try swapping around different afm's though, have a couple lying around-what they go to, I've no idea.

If your gonna spend that much on oil, castrol edge 10w60 is great $70-$90 for 5 litres

thats what im gonna use in my new engine

I wouldn't run 10w 60 in Hydraulic lifter type heads.

Factory recommend 10w30 or 10w40; I'd go with a 10w40 or 5w40.

let me guess, you think its too thick?

10w60 is no thicker than 10w40 it just handles the heat better

I'm reasonable clued up,

and this is the very simplfied version that was explained to me....

the number before the W i.e the 10 is reference to viscosity of the oil when its cold, or how it acts when cold.

if the first number (i.e 5w..)is lower then the oil acts thinner when cold than a 10W..

and the second number is how well the oil holds its viscosity at high temps so a 10w60 can run hotter for longer than a 10w40 without breaking down.

I've got a good mate who has a v2 wrx and now owns a v7 sti, he has used edge 10w60 in both cars, the v2 he put over 100,000kms on it while he owned it and never had a problem with hydraulic lifters, he uses it now in his v7 and has never had problems with the AVCS.

anyway I recommend running castrol edge more than I recommend runing 10w60, but if money was no option I'd run Motul 10w40 300V

The second number is the viscosity at a standard operating temperature and is rated by how long it takes a standard amount of oil to flow through a standard orifice at a standard temperature (to quote Wikipedia).

So a particular 10w60 oil "may" be able to handle higher temps better than a particular 10w40 but it is still going to be thicker than the 10w40 at normal temps. This may not cause an issue at all, and is up to the end user as to whether they want to use it or not.

Agreed, and in my mind a 10w60 could pump up the lifters. A personnel choice/recommendation specific to the car.

      Afternoon team,
im new to the group first time posting. Im hoping some body can help me get my launch control all dialled in on my link g4x. Ive had the computer and car all tuned from chris at prestige awesome knowlegable guy super happy with the results but now im wanting to get my launch/anti lag all dialled in. Ive been reading multiple different forums etc all with different conflicking information which has made me nervious with what do i listen to this or that if you get what i mean. Now ive started to make myself familiar with my PClink software etc the past few weeks and im eager to learn how to do minor setups or tweaks etc so im not relieing on my tuner so much and obviously saving myself abit hurt in the back pocket.
Now back to the question at hand.... Im wondering if theres and one who could please share there knowledge and wisdom with setting all my values, timing, fuel etc when i have launch control armed and engaged, or even a launch tune file they can possibly send me to load onto my tune. Ive figured out the setup of my digital inputs turning launch control on etc and its obvisously on its pre set factory settings. It engages but doesnt sound the greatest or as angry as it should i feel. Hence reaching out to you good buggers.

Cheers in advance for any info and help yous maybe able to give me.

      Cheers Shaun
